Men's Hockey Defeated At No. 6 Boston University, 5-2
Feb. 22, 2002 BOSTON, MASS. -- The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated at No. 6-ranked Boston University, 5-2, on Friday, February 22 at BU's Walter Brown Arena in a HOCKEY EAST league contest. The Terriers opened the scoring in the first period, scoring the game's first two goals. Steve Greeley gave BU a 1-0 5:55 into the contest when he snapped a wrist shot past Providence goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.). Jack Baker increased the Terriers' lead to 2-0 at 10:23 finishing off passes from Brian McConnell and Chris Dyment for the power-play tally. The Friars pulled to within one goal when sophomore leftwing Peter Zingoni (Newtown, Conn.) converted a PC two-on-one break, firing a one-timer from senior Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) past Boston University goaltender Sean Fields. BU got the two-goal lead back at the 15:01 when Frantisek Skladany scored his 10th goal of the season.
The Friars cut into the Terriers' lead three-and-a-half minutes into the second period when junior Doug Wright (Kamsack, Sask.) scored the Providence. Junior co-captain Jon DiSalvatore (South Windsor, Conn.) broke up the BU play in the neutral zone and his linemate, Peter Fregoe, picked up the puck and carried it into the zone to the right of BU's Fields. Fregoe fed Wright, who was streaking down the left side to the Terriers' goal and he one-timed the Fregoe feed past a diving Fields for his fifth goal of the season. Providence had seemed to tie the contest at 7:51 when sophomore defenseman Regan Kelly (Imperial, Sask.) fired a pass from in front his goal to senior Drew Omicioli (West Warwick, R.I.), fresh out of the penalty box. Omicioli skated in all alone on Fields and slipped a shot under Fields' right pad. As Fields attempted to make the save a BU defenseman rode Omicioli into the Terrier goaltender, and clearly across the goalline before the net came off its moorings. After a lengthy debate with one of his linesman, referee Jeff Bunyon ruled the play no goal.
Boston University regained its two-goal lead at the start of the third period when Brian Collins scored on the power play just 32 seconds into the period. The Terriers' Frantisek Skladany increased BU's lead to 5-2 at 4:14 of the third period. Gregg Johnson assisted on the goal.
