Men's Hockey Defeats No. 9 Boston University, 5-4, in Overtime
Feb. 21, 2003 PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Senior Jon DiSalvatore (S. Windsor, Conn.) scored his second goal of the game with 45 seconds remaining in overtime in a shorthanded situation to give Providence College a 5-4 win over No. 9 Boston University on Friday, February 21 in Hockey East action at Schneider Arena. With the win, the Friars jump into a tie for fourth place with Terriers in the league standings. Both teams have 24 points, but the Terriers have played one less game. The Friars took advantage of their power-play opportunities to score two goals in the first period. PC jumped took a 1-0 lead at 7:25 of the first period when DiSalvatore collected a shot off the end boards and fired it into an open net during PC's first power play of the game. The Friars again capitalized on a power-play when senior Doug Wright (Kamsack, Saskatchewan) wristed in a shot from the top of the crease at the 16:42 mark. The Friars wasted little time building on their lead as junior Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.) scored off a wrist shot from 10 feet in front of the net just 1:59 into the second period. The Terriers got on the scoreboard during a five-on-three power-play advantage when Brian Collins knocked in a rebound past Friar goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) at the 4:37 mark. Providence scored its fourth goal on its 10th shot of the game when graduate student Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) tallied his team-leading 20th goal of the season at the 5:33 mark of the second period. The game got hectic in the third period as the Terriers offense came to life over the final 7:03 of regulation. John Laliberte scored BU's second goal of the game when he sent a wrist shot toward the net from the right face off circle that found the back of the goal through a screen at the 12:57 mark. The Terriers got within one goal (4-3) when Brad Zancanaro redirected a blast from the left point at 14:31. Boston University completed its comeback to force overtime on a goal by Brian McConnell with 1:24 remaining in the game. BU pulled goaltender Sean Fields for an extra skater and worked the puck down low to McConnell who flipped a shot past Schaefer to tie the game at 4-4. Providence picked up its play in overtime, but BU drew the advantage when senior Devin Rask (Parkside, Saskatchewan) was whistled for a cross checking penalty at 2:41 of the extra period. Wright broke down the right side and fired a low shot that missed the net. He collected his rebound and fed it to DiSalvatore in the right circle. DiSalvatore fired a shot that beat Fields to give PC its second overtime win against the Terriers this season. Schaefer finished with 26 stops and Field had 11 saves for BU. Both teams return to action on Saturday, February 22 at Boston University at 7:00 p.m. on Fox Sports Net.
