BOSTON, Mass. - The Providence College men's hockey team (12-14-3, 10-10-2) and Northeastern (11-14-4, 7-12-3) skated to a 1-1 overtime tie Friday night in a Hockey East game played at Matthews Arena in Boston, Mass.
Providence scored just 29 seconds into the game to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.) fired a shot from a tough angle and the puck found its way into the net. It marked his team leading 14th goal of the season. Freshman Drew Brown (Grass Lake, Mich.) and senior Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) assisted on the goal. Northeastern evened the score at 6:23 when Josh Manson's shot was re-directed by Garrett Vermeersch and into the net.
Neither team could score the rest of the way as both goalies thwarted all other chances. Senior Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.) finished with 20 saves for the Friars, who outshot the Huskies, 23-21, including a 4-0 edge in overtime. Chris Rawlings totaled 22 saves for Northeastern.
The two teams will square off again at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 18 at Matthews Arena.
