NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -
The Providence College men's hockey team (9-13-1, 4-11-1 Hockey East) was defeated at Merrimack (8-13-0, 5-9-0 Hockey East) by a scored of 2-1 in overtime Saturday night in a Hockey East game played at Lawler Arena. Brandon Brodhag's goal 1:03 into the extra session was the game winner and he tallied eighth of the season to lead the Warriors.
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead at 15:04 when Carter Madsen potted his second goal of the season as he converted on a rebound following a shot from the point by Adam Ross.
In the second period, the Friars evened the score (1-1) soon after a power play as senior Ian O'Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) capitalized on a rebound in front. Junior Eric Baier (North Kingstown, R.I.) and freshman Aaron Jamnick (Hibbing, Minn.) also assisted on the goal. It marked O'Connor's sixth goal of the season and the third consecutive game in which he has scored a goal. Merrimack nearly regained the lead at 16:57 when Stephane Da Costa weaved his way around the PC defense before skating in alone against PC goalie Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.), but Beaudry made a glove save on Da Costa's wrist shot.
Beaudry stymied Da Costa again with 1:07 left in the third period as Da Costa gained possession of the puck in the slot and fired a wrist shot aimed at the top corner, but Beaudry made a sprawling glove stop. Beaudry finished with 39 saves for the second consecutive night, while Andrew Braithwaite stopped 34 shots.
The Friars are back in action on Friday, January 29 when they travel to Boston College, while Merrimack hosts UNH.
