PROVIDENCE DEFEATS UMASS-AMHERST, 8-1 Men's Hockey

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Troy Lake and Mike Omicioli each tallied two goals to lead the Providence College Friars to an 8-1 win against UMass-Amherst in HOCKEY EAST action on Friday, January 15 at PC's Schneider Arena.

The Friars wasted little time taking advantage of a five minute major penalty to Bryan Fitzgerald at 2:40 of the first period as Mike Omicioli slapped home a PC goal eight seconds into the penalty to give the Friars a 1-0 lead. Jerry Keefe made a nifty move during a one-on-one break in when he slipped the puck through the UMass defender then skated by the defenseman and slid a low shot past UMass goaltender Mike Johnson at 10:45 of the first for the Friars' second goal. The Friars tallied their final goal of the first period when Josh MacNevin blasted a low shot past Johnson on the stick side at 15:53 of the first.

PC's offense looked sharp in the second period as the team increased its lead to 7-0 with four goals in the second 20 minutes of play. Nick Lent intercepted a pass by Johnson out of the defensive zone and wristed a shot into the an empty net at 6:29 of the second. After Lent's goal, Johnson was replaced by Markus Helanen in goal for the Minutemen. Special teams accounted for the next two PC goals as Troy Lake scored a power-play tally at 13:11 and Mike Omicioli contributed with his second goal of the night in a short-handed situation at 16:08. Lake added his second goal of the period at 18:28 to close out the scoring for the Friars in the second.

UMass' Jay Shaw tallied the lone goal of the game for the Minutemen when he fired in a wrist shot at 5:53 of the third period. Matt Libby closed out the scoring for the Friars with his third goal of the season at 17:29 of the third.
