Men's Hockey Defeats Brown, 3-2, to Capture Mayor's Cup

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- - Freshman Drew Omicioli scored at 10:30 of the third period to give the Providence College Friars a 3-2 win against cross-town rival Brown University in the 13th annual Mayor's Cup on Tuesday, January 12, 1999 in Providence, R.I. at Brown's Meehan Auditorium. The victory raised PC's record to 8-4-1 in the Mayor's Cup series and gave the Friars their first win since the 1994-95 season.

After a scoreless first period, Brown tallied the first goal of the game at 1:38 of the second period. Adrian Smith picked up a rebound of Christian Warrington's shot and backhanded it by PC goaltender Mark Kane. The Friars quickly evened the game when Jon Coe broke in the Brown zone and put a shot past Bear goaltender Scott Stirling at 2:58 of the second period. The Bears regained the lead at 13:58 of the second period during a power play when Gianni Cantini knocked in a rebound of Jon Zielinski's shot from the left point. Jerry Keefe tied the game at 2-2 for PC when he took a pass from Fernando Pisani during a two-on-one and slid a low backhander by Stirling with 42 seconds remaining in the second period.

The Friars took their first lead of the game at 10:30 of the third period when two Rhode Island natives connected for the game winner. Jason Ialongo of Cranston, R.I. blasted a shot from the left point which Drew Omicioli tipped into the net for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

With the win, Providence raised its record to 10-9 overall , while Brown fell to 2-7-4 overall .

Providence returns to action on Friday, Jan. 15 against UMass-Amherst at PC's Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
