KARIM'S SUPREME...Karim Shabazz recorded the first triple-double at Providence in 22 years on Monday night with his 25 points/15 rebounds/10 blocks game versus Long Island. HOME AND AWAY....During the 1999-2000 season, the Friars turned in their first winning road record in BIG EAST play in the league's first 20 years. The Friars were 5-4 away from the Civic Center in league games.
NAIL BITERS...The four-point loss to Central Connecticut was the Friars' second four-point loss this season. PC is 0-2 in "close" games this season after going 3-6 in "close" games last season. "Close" games are games decided by five points or less.
BACK IN ACTION...Junior guard John Linehan returned to the Friars' lineup versus Boston University after being out of action since October 25th when he underwent surgery for a sports hernia. Following two more surgeries for a blood clot and an infection, PC's superpest missed the Friars' first five games. In four games since his return to the lineup, Linehan is averaging 25.0 minutes per game with 5.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals per game.. On Saturday, December 4th at North Carolina State, Linehan played 27 minutes with 12 points, equalled a career high with six rebounds, had five assists and four steals. Linehan re-aggravated the injury in the Central Connecticut game and has sat out the last two games versus Arkansas and Long Island University. He is questionable for the Massachusetts game.
FRIARS IN SEASON OPENERS...The loss to Holy Cross in the November 20th home opener gives PC a 63-10 record in season opening games in the school's 73-year basketball history. The loss was also the Friars' first home opening loss since November 29, 1984 when PC lost to Assumption, 70-67. That broke a streak of 14 consecutive home opening wins. The Friars are now 49-5 in opening games at home and 14-5 in road openers. PC lost its opening game last year to Vanderbilt, but the game was part of the CoSIDA Classic and the Civic Center was considered a neutral court.
HIGHS AND LOWS...The 43 points scored by the Friars in the 54-43 loss to Holy Cross (11/20/99) is the fewest points the Friars have scored in a game since December 27, 1982 when they lost by an identical 54-43 score to the University of Hawaii in the Rainbow Classic. Just one week later, the Friars set the school's single game scoring mark with 120 points versus American University - Puerto Rico.
FOR THE RECORDS...The Friars' 120-point outburst against American University of Puerto Rico sets the single game mark for points in a game. The previous mark was 118 and was set on January 20th, 1973 in a 118-88 win over Western Kentucky. PC's 50 field goals versus American also set a school mark. The previous best of 48 was done four times with the last one coming on December 18, 1976 versus Brown University.
FRIARS FOR THREE...The Friars hit on a season high 11 three-pointers in the victory over American-Puerto Rico. Then followed that with a 10-for-20 performance versus Boston University. After making just eight of their first 45 three point attempts (17.8%), the Friars have made 51 of 147 for a 34.6% average. Included in those totals was a school record performance of 7-for-9 (77.8%) in the win over Arkansas. On the season, PC has made 59 of 192 three-point tries (30.7%).
FINDING THE RANGE...Two of the Friars newest players recorded career highs in the win over American University. Freshman guard Abdul Mills scored 20 points and freshman forward Romuald Augustin scored a season high 15 points, getting 13 of those in the first half.
FRIARS VERSUS 1999-00 FOES...
HOLIDAY SCHEDULE...After having 14 days off for finals (December 8-21) the Friars are now in the midst of a six-game homestand that will go through Wednesday, January 5th. PC is 2-1 in the home stand, losing to Central Connecticut (54-50) while beating Arkansas (87-81) and Long Island University (79-63). After tonight's game with Massachusetts, the Friars Fordham (1/2) before opening the BIG EAST schedule with Georgetown on January 5th.
MR. ROGERS...Junior college transfer Chris Rogers made his first start of the season at point guard for the Friars versus Virginia and turned in his best performance. The Shreveport, La. native scored 11 points (4-7 FG, 2-4 3PT, 1-2 FT), pulled down seven rebounds and had three assists in the game.
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM...Junior forward Erron Maxey was chosen to the All-Tournament team at the Puerto Rico Shootout. In three games, Maxey scored 61 points (20.3 ppg) and had 22 rebounds (7.3 rpg). The Friars' team captain set personal bests with 12 field goals and 25 points in the win over American University.
MAXEY-MUM EFFORT....Junior forward Erron Maxey continues his red-hot play as he turned in his fourth consecutive double-double of the season (18 points/11 rebounds) in the win over Arkansas. For the season, he now has five and for his career he now has ten. During his current streak of four straight, the high-flying forward has 19 points/14 rebounds versus Central Connecticut, 12 points and 14 rebounds versus Rhode Island and 18 points and 10 boards versus North Carolina State. Over the last five games, Maxey has scored 86 points (17.2 ppg) and pulled down 60 rebounds (12.0 rpg). Earlier in the season, the Lake Elsinore, California native had 15 points and a career-best 18 rebounds in PC's win over Brown in his other double-double. Maxey has led the Friars in scoring in eight of 11 games this season and in rebounding in seven of PC's first 11 games. He is second on the squad with 17.0 ppg and 9.6 boards per game. His five double-doubles rank him third among BIG EAST players
MAXEY DOUBLE-DOUBLES:
WADE-ING INTO THE ACTION...Junior guard Donta Wade found the scoring touch with a career high 24-point night in PC's win over Arkansas. Wade was 8-for-13 from the floor with a career best 6-for-8 game from beyond the three-point line and added a pair of free throws in 24 minutes off the bench. Earlier in the week, Wade made his first start of the season scoring 12 points with three rebounds versus Central Connecticut. The junior college transfer got off to a slow start for the Friars scoring just nine points in PC's first four games. He found the range in Puerto Rico with 19 points off the bench going 7-11 FG and 5-7 3PTers. In the win over Boston University, Wade again sparked the Friars with 11 points off the bench (4-6 FG, 3-5 3PT). In his last six games, Wade has scored 79 points (11.2 points per game).
SLAMMING THE DOOR...PC's relentless defense against Rhode Island held the Rams to a season-low 49 points on December 7th. The 49 points equals the fewest points a PC team has surrendered in Tim Welsh's two seasons guiding the Black and White. Last year, the Friars defeated Seton Hall by a 65-49 margin. PC's defense held URI to a season low 30.2% shooting (13-43) and force the Rams into 24 turnovers on the night.
FRIARS VS. RANKED TEAMS...A year ago, the Friars were 4-6 in games against teams ranked in the Top 25 by the Associated Press and/or USA TODAY/ESPN. With the loss to #3/#2 Michigan State in the opening game of the Puerto Rico Shootout, PC is 0-1 this season.
Associated Press USA TODAY/ESPN RANK TEAM RANK TEAM #3 Michigan State L 58-82 #2 Michigan State L 58-82
FINDING THE HANDLE...After cutting their turnovers to 14 per game over the previous four games, the Friars turned the ball over a season high 26 times in the win over Arkansas. In PC's first five games, the Friars turned it over 113 times for an average of 22.6 per game. From the Boston University game through Central Connecticut, PC had just 56 turnovers in those four games. On the season, PC has turned it over 212 times for 19.3 per game. On the other hand, PC has forced 233 turnovers for an average of 21.2 per game.
