PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team will honor the Boston Red Sox and the Pawtucket Red Sox as Boston captured the 2013 World Series. Providence College will hold a special presentation of the World Series Trophy at halftime of the Friars versus Boston College men's basketball game on Friday, November 8. The game will tip off at 6:00 p.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence. It will be the first college basketball game ever aired on Fox Sports 1.
The halftime presentation will include a tribute to the Pawtucket Red Sox, who are a long-time sponsorship partner of Providence College athletics. The ceremony also will include former Friar and current Boston Red Sox player John McDonald. McDonald was a member of the 2013 Red Sox team.
Tickets are available for the game and can be purchased by calling 401-865-GOPC or online at friars.com. Providence College Athletics and Fox Sports 1, the new television home of the BIG EAST Conference, will be giving away Fox Sports 1/Providence College tee shirts to the first 7,500 fans that enter the Dunkin' Donuts Center as the team looks to have fans "white out" the Dunk.
Legendary announcers Bill Raftery and Gus Johnson will be the broadcast team for the game. Fox Sports 1 is the home to BIG EAST basketball and will televise more than 100 men's games this season, including the entire BIG EAST men's basketball Tournament live from Madison Square Garden.
The Friars and Eagles are longtime rivals as the two teams have met every season since 1953-54. Boston College is the third most-common opponent for Providence, as they have met 107 times with the Friars holding a 58-49 advantage. Of those meetings, 56 came in BIG EAST Conference play, as BC was a member of the league from 1975-2005 before moving to the Atlantic Coast Conference. Boston College is one of three schools PC has played at least 100 times -- the others being Rhode Island (123 games) and Brown (119 games). The first meeting between PC and BC was in Providence in 1942, with the Friars taking a 64-37 win. Last season, the Friars were defeated at Boston College, 71-68, on December 22, 2012. In the last meeting between the two teams in Providence, the Friars defeated the Eagles, 64-57, at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence on December 8, 2011. The Eagles last win over the Friars in Providence was an 82-77 victory on November 28, 2009.
