    Thursday, August 21- The Vatican

    Written by Tom Planek:

The day began with an early wake-up call and a light breakfast at our hotel. The 39 members of our group departed at 8:30 a.m. for Vatican City. The most efficient way to get to this small country is via the subway system. After about a twenty-minute adventure on the subway we were standing in Saint Peter's Square snapping photos of Saint Peter's Basilica. We then met our tour guide, who brought us through the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel. Our tour guide for the Vatican was very good at his job. He was able to explain things easily for our group. He made everything interesting. He even cracked a few jokes. He led us through the Vatican Museum where we viewed some impressive sculptures. We then arrived at the Sistine Chapel. It was truly amazing and worth every second of the trip. Our tour guide had prepared us for the Sistine Chapel. He explained every section of Michelangelo's masterpiece, which allowed us to admire it in peace rather than talk about it. Our tour ended in the Sistine Chapel. We were then given free time inside of the Basilica. The inside of the Basilica was an unbelievable sight. An estimated 12,000 to 24,000 people visit the Vatican every day. It is very inspiring to know how many people want to visit this incredibly Holy place. After our trip to Vatican City ended, we took the subway back to the hotel where we rested and enjoyed our final day in Italy.
