1998-99....The Friars were 16-14 overall and 9-9 in BIG EAST play during the 1998-99 season. The 9-9 record in the league tied the Friars for sixth. The Friars were 5-4 on the road with the five road wins the most since joining the BIG EAST. PC lost in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament to Georgetown, 68-66. The Friars returned to the NIT for the 15th time in school history and the first time since the 1995-96 season. Playing on the road at North Carolina State, PC fell to the Wolfpack, 92-86. During the season, PC defeated four top 25 teams and was 4-6 against the nation's elite for the year.
JAMEL THOMAS...Jamel Thomas was a First Team All-BIG EAST selection in his outstanding senior season. Overall, Thomas was the eighth Providence College player to be named First Team All-BIG EAST and the first since Austin Croshere in 1997. On February 13, Thomas moved into third place on PC's all-time scoring list and finished his career with 1,971 career points. Thomas is just the third player in school history to lead his team in scoring and rebounding two seasons in a row. He joins Jim Hadnot (three times) and Marvin Barnes (twice) as the only players to have achieved that feat.
NEW FACES...The Providence College basketball roster will change dramatically for the 1999-2000 season. Six players from last year's team have departed. Justin Farley, Kendrick Moore, Jamel Thomas and Corey Wright have graduated. Leon Brisport and Ben Perkins have announced that they will transfer. The seven returnees include Jamaal Camah, Llewellyn Cole, Sean Connolly, John Linehan and Erron Maxey along with walk-ons Peter Farrell-Marcellino and Kareem Hayletts. The eight new faces include freshmen, Romeo Augustin, Mark Jarrell-Wright, Marcus Jefferson and Abdul Mills. David Murray, Chris Rogers and Donta Wade join the Friars as Junior College transfers and Karim Shabazz transfered to PC from Florida State in December. He will be eligible for the second semester next season.
