PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College senior point guard Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) has been selected to participate in the Nike Basketball Deron Williams Skills Academy this summer in Chicago, Ill. This academy is extremely exclusive with only 15-20 high school and 15-20 college point guards selected to participate.
The Deron Williams Skills Academy will take place in Chicago, Ill., on June 21-23. The players will get the unique opportunity to work with a high-level coaching staff and participate in workouts twice a day and also play competitive scrimmages. Council will get the opportunity to learn what it takes to compete against other top point guards and receive hands-on instruction that will help to refine his game and prepare him for the upcoming season and his future in basketball.
Nike sponsors these skills camps to enhance the abilities of players at every position. Nike holds four different camps which are specific to each position. The four Nike camps taking place this year include the Deron Williams, Amar'e Stoudemire, Kevin Durant, and LeBron James Skills Academies. The specific focus of Nike Camps is to instill the fundamentals into the next generation of top players.
Council is the first Friar to attend a Nike Skills Camp since Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.). Brooks attended the Paul Pierce Skills Academy at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., in the summer of 2009. Marshon Brooks graduated from Providence College in 2011 and has recently completed his first year in the NBA alongside Deron Williams on the New Jersey Nets.
Council, who was a 2012 Third Team ALL-BIG EAST selection, finished first in the BIG EAST in assists and fourth in the nation (7.5 apg.). He also finished first in the BIG EAST in minutes played with 38.7 minutes per game in 31 games. Council contributed 15.5 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 7.5 apg, and 1.3 spg for the 2011-2012 season.
