April 15, 2009
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College men's basketball coach Keno Davis announced on April 15 that student-athletes Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Russ Permenter (Temple, Texas) each signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Providence College beginning in September 2009. Council, a 6-foot-2-inch, 180-pound point guard attends the Patterson School in Lenoir, North Carolina. Patterson, which had been the No. 1 ranked prep school boys basketball team for most of the season, finished with a 34-3 mark in 2009. At Patterson, Council played for legendary prep school coach Chris Chaney and averaged 10.2 points and 10.1 assists per game. Council shot 53 percent from three-point territory. He is one of the top-ranked point guards in the country. ESPN.com gave him the 11th highest grade amongst point guards and Scout.com ranks him as the 34th best point guard in the nation. Council played for Lincoln High School (Brooklyn) in 2008. He has good quickness that allows him to get to the rim and lead an up-tempo offense. Permenter, a 6-foot-9-inch, 230-pound center attends Temple College in Temple, Texas. In 2009, Permenter averaged 17.9 points, 8.4 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game. For his efforts, he earned North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference First Team accolades. Permenter led the league in blocks and ranked third in scoring and rebounding. Permenter transferred to Temple College after spending his freshman season at the University of Texas-San Antonio. He had an outstanding high school career at Temple High School. He averaged 22 points, 14 rebounds and 6.6 blocks during his senior season. He was named District 13-5A MVP and First Team All-District in 2007. He was ranked 27th among Texas high school seniors in 2007, according to TexasHoops.com. Permenter can get up and down the court, block shots and has the ability to hit mid-range jump shots. "We are extremely pleased to be adding Russ and Vincent to our basketball program," Davis said. "They are both very talented student-athletes who we anticipate will have great success at Providence College."
Council and Permenter join Kadeem Batts (Powder Springs, Ga.), Johnnie Lacy (Milwaukee, Wis.), Duke Mondy (Grand Rapids, Mich.), James Still (Detroit, Mich.) and Kyle Wright (Hartford, Conn.) as newcomers to the Friar roster who will attend Providence College beginning in September 2009. Each one of these student-athletes has signed an NLI to attend Providence College.
