March 19, 2009
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College senior guard Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) and senior forward Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) will attend the 57th Annual Portsmouth Invitational Tournament on April 8-11 in Portsmouth, Virginia. The Portsmouth Invitational is the only post-season event for college seniors prior to the NBA Pre-Draft Camp and is the only post-season event to include actual game competition. "It is a great honor and tribute to the hard work of Weyinmi and Geoff to be invited to this prestigious event," Providence College Head Coach Keno Davis said. Efejuku led the team in scoring this year, averaging 15.7 ppg. He finished second on the team in field goal percentage (165-353, 46.7 percent) and three-point field goal percentage (40-103, 38.8 percent). He earned All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention accolades and USBWA All-District 1 honors this season. Efejuku concluded his career ranked 12th all-time in scoring at Providence with 1,500 points. He is one of only 12 players in the history of the College to score 1,500 or more points. McDermott led the team in rebounding this season, averaging 8.5 rpg. He also averaged 8.2 points per game and led the team in steals with 51. McDermott finished his career at Providence ranked 29th all-time in scoring with 1,122 points. He also ranks fourth all-time in rebounds (1,055) and eighth all-time in assists (478). McDermott is just the sixth Friar all-time to register 1,000 or more points and 1,000 or more rebounds. He set the Providence College all-time record for career starts (122) and he is the only player in Friar history to start every game of his career. During the four-day Portsmouth Invitational, college seniors have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills to more than 200 representatives from all 30 NBA teams. In addition, more than 100 foreign professional league scouts also are in attendance each year.
