FRIARS IN THE NIT....The Friars return to the NIT for the 15th time in school history and the first time since the 1995-96 season. That year, the Friars defeated Fairfield before losing to St. Joseph's (PA) in the second round. Providence owns a 28-15 (.651) record in the NIT dating back to its first appearance in 1959. PC has won the NIT twice (1961 and 1963), finished second twice (1960 and 1975) and finished fourth three times (1959, 1976 and 1993).
FRIARS VERSUS WOLFPACK...The Friars and Wolfpack meet for the second time this season and the fourth time in the all-time series. The Friars won in Providence, 80-69, on November 24th. North Carolina State holds a 2-1 edge in the all-time series. The two teams have met in the NIT before. In 1976, the Friars and Wolfpack advanced to the finals at Madison Square Garden and met in the consolation game where NC State took third with a 74-69 win on March 20, 1976. The other meeting came in the 1974 NCAA Tournament where the Friars lost to the eventual national champions in Raleigh, 92-78, in the Eastern Regionals. The two teams are scheduled to play again next season in Raleigh.
EARLIER THIS SEASON...Providence jumped out to a 39-29 halftime lead on the way to an 80-69 win at the Providence Civic Center on November 24th. Jamel Thomas was one of four Friars in double figures as he led PC with 18 points. Sean Connolly added 17, Corey Wright had a career high 14 and Llewellyn Cole chipped in 12 in the win. The Wolfpack was led by Kenny Inge with 19, Ron Kelley had 18 and Adam Harrington 14 in the game. PC forced NC State into 28 turnovers in the game. The Friars shot 45.8% (27-59) from the floor while the Wolfpack shot 51.9% (27-52). PC was outrebounded, 32-29 on the night.
NIT ROUND TWO...The winner of the Providence College-North Carolina State game will play the winner of the Princeton-Georgetown game next week at a date and site yet to be determined.
LEADER OF THE FRIARS...Jamel Thomas is the eighth Providence College player to be named First Team All-BIG EAST and the first since Austin Croshere in 1997. The Friars' All-American candidate has carried the Friars all season and is the BIG EAST's leading scorer averaging 21.9 points per game which ranks him 11th in the country. Thomas now has a career high 636 points this season, the ninth best total ever at Providence. On February 13, Thomas moved into third place on PC's all-time scoring list and now has 1,946 career points. The Brooklyn, New York native is just the third player in school history to lead his team in scoring and rebounding two seasons in a row. He joins Jim Hadnot (three times) and Marvin Barnes (twice) as the only players to have achieved that feat.
