PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Former Providence College men's basketball player Bruce `Soup' Campbell passed away today (March 8) at the age of 57. Campbell, a native of New Haven, Conn., was one of the all-time assists leaders at Providence College for forwards. In 122 career games as a Friar, Campbell recorded 290 assists (2.4 apg). He also averaged 14.8 points and 7.8 rebounds during his career as a Friar.
Campbell played for legendary Friar Head Coach Dave Gavitt. In four seasons (1974-78), Campbell helped the Friars post an 89-35 mark (.718). The team advanced to the NIT in his freshman and sophomore seasons and reached the NCAA Tournament in his junior and senior seasons. In 1976, Campbell earned Honorable Mention All-America accolades after he averaged 15.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
Campbell was drafted by New Jersey Nets. He played professionally in Europe for 10 seasons.
