Vincent Council earned BIG EAST Honorable Mention.

March 7, 2010

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - It was announced on March 7 that Providence College sophomore forward Jamine Peterson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) earned All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention honors while freshman guard Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) garnered All-Rookie Team accolades. It marks the first time both players have earned post-season All-BIG EAST recognition.

Peterson was named All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention as one of the most improved players in the conference this season. After averaging 4.7 points and 2.9 rebounds per contest as a freshman in 2007-08 (Peterson sat out last season), the 6-6 sophomore has led the Friars in 2009-10 with 19.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. He ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in scoring and is second overall in rebounding. His 4.17 offensive rebounds per game is tops in the league. For his efforts, Peterson earned BIG EAST Honor Roll accolades on December 28 and February 1 this season.

Peterson has posted at least 10 points in 27-of-30 games and 10 or more rebounds in 15 contests. The 6-6 forward also leads the Friars with 16 20-point performances and seven 25-point games in 2009-10. His 16 20-point efforts are the most by a Friar since Ryan Gomes reached the mark 20 times in 2004-05. Peterson's BIG EAST-leading 15 double-doubles are the third most by a Friar since 1990 and the most since Ryan Gomes recorded 17 in 2002-03.

The Brooklyn, N.Y. native is one of only three players in the nation this season to record at least 20 rebounds in two games on the year. With his 29-point, 20-rebound performance against Rutgers on January 9, Peterson became the seventh Friar and 12th player in BIG EAST history to post 20 points and 20 rebounds in a game.

Council earns All-Rookie Team honors after placing second amongst BIG EAST freshmen with 10.2 points per game. In conference play, Council ranks first amongst rookies with 5.3 assists and 1.4 steals per contest. His 5.3 assists per game is over 2.3 more than the second-leading freshman and also third best amongst all BIG EAST players.

With his seven-assist performance against Marquette on February 6, Council became the first Providence freshman since Donnie McGrath in 2002-03 to post at least 100 assists in a season. His 135 assists in 2009-10 ranks first on the Friars and is ninth most in the BIG EAST.

On the season, the 6-2 guard recorded at least four assists in 16-of-18 BIG EAST contests this season and at least six assists in nine league games. Council recorded a career-best nine assists to go along with his 16 points at No. 3/4 Syracuse on February 2 and posted a personal-best 25 points in the Friars' regular season finale against Seton Hall on March 6. Council earned BIG EAST Rookie of the Week on January 18 after posting 24 points at Marquette on January 17.
