Herbert Hill Named First Team All-BIG EAST
March 5, 2007 PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College senior forward/center Herbert Hill (Kinston, N.C.) was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team on Monday, March 5. Sophomore forward Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and sophomore guard Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) earned All-BIG EAST Honorable mention accolades. It marks the first time Hill has earned All-BIG EAST honors and the first time a Friar has been named to the First Team since Ryan Gomes earned the accolade in 2005. Hill is the eighth player in Friar history to earn First Team honors and marks the ninth time a Friar has been named to the First Team. Hill, one of the most improved players in the BIG EAST this season, is averaging 18.0 ppg and 8.6 rebounds. In league action, he finished the regular season as the BIG EAST scoring champion (19.9 ppg). He ranks second in rebounding (9.8 rpg), third in field goal percentage (.592) and third in blocked shots (3.25 bpg). Hill has recorded 11 double-doubles this season, including a 20-point, 20-rebound effort in a win over George Washington on November 26. He became the first Friar to post a 20-20 game since Marvin Barnes accomplished the feat in 1974. On February 24, Hill recorded a career-high 29 points and registered 15 rebounds against Syracuse. On Sunday, he earned his second BIG EAST Player of the Week honor. He also has earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll accolades four times this season. He ranks fourth all-time at Providence College with 184 blocks. McDermott is one of the most dynamic players in the BIG EAST. The sophomore forward leads the league in assists (5.38 apg), ranks fourth in rebounding (9.3 rpg) and fifth in steals (1.9 spg). McDermott has recorded 10 double-doubles this season, including the first triple-double at PC since 1999 when he registered 12 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists versus Harvard on December 22. He can became the first Friar ever to register more than 150 assists and more than 250 rebounds in the same season with seven assists at St. John's on March 4.
Curry is the Friars' floor general averaging a team-high 36.5 minutes per game. He is second on the team in scoring (16.0) and ranks seventh in the BIG EAST. The sophomore guard leads the league in free throw percentage (89.9%) and ranks fifth in assists (4.6 apg). He has recorded double figures in 22 of 24 games played. Curry has recorded two double-doubles this season. He scored 16 points and added a career-high 12 assists against Rhode Island on December 2.
