Men's Basketball To Play Georgetown In The First Round Of The BIG EAST Tournament
March 3, 2002 PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's basketball team (15-15) enters the BIG EAST Tournament as a No. 6 seed from the East Division. PC finished the season in sixth place in the BIG EAST East Division with a 6-10 mark. The Friars will play Georgetown (18-10) on Wednesday, March 6 at 2:00 p.m. in the First Round. The Hoyas finished as the No. 3 seed from the West Division with a 9-7 record in conference play. The Friars will be looking to earn their first win at the BIG EAST Tournament since 1998 when PC defeated Notre Dame, 72-55, in the first round. The Friars hold an all-time record of 14-21 at the BIG EAST Tournament. PC won its only BIG EAST Tournament title in 1994 when the team defeated Georgetown, 74-64, in the championship game. The Friars and the Hoyas did not play in regular-season action this year. The Friars and the Hoyas have met 49 times in the all-time series with Georgetown holding a 32-17 lead in the series. PC is 12-10 all-time at home against Georgetown, 3-16 on the road and 2-6 on neutral courts against the Hoyas. The two teams first met on January 28, 1956 when the Hoyas earned a 77-51 win at Providence, R.I. In the most recent game between the two teams, Providence defeated the Hoyas, 103-79, at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on February 10, 2001. It was the only game between the two teams last season. The last time Georgetown defeated the Friars was on March 3, 1999 when the Hoyas won 68-66 at the BIG EAST Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York. The Friars have posted a 1-6 mark against the Hoyas in BIG EAST Tournament action with PC's only win being a 74-64 victory in the championship game of the 1994 Tournament. The BIG EAST Tournament will take place on March 6-9 at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y.
