BIG EAST TOURNEY OPENERS....For the second year in a row, the Friars will open the BIG EAST Tournament playing the same team they played in the season finale. Last year, the Friars closed the regular season with a win against Notre Dame (77-62) and then played the Irish in the 8-9 game at the Garden. The Friars won that game, 72-55. On Saturday, February 27th, PC defeated Georgetown, 64-62 on Erron Maxey's 8-foot jumper with 0.5 seconds left. The two teams face each other in the 7-11 game on March 3 at 7:30 p.m.
FRIARS VERSUS HOYAS...The Hoyas and Friars meet for the seventh time in BIG EAST Tournament play with Georgetown holding a 5-1 edge. PC won the last meeting, 74-64, during the 1994 tournament on the way to the championship. This is the 47th time the two schools have met with Georgetown holding a 31-15 edge in the series. PC's win on Saturday snapped a four-game Georgetown winning streak in the series. The two teams split the season series with Georgetown winning on January 9th, 75-70 at the MCI Center. The Friars won on February 27th, 64-62, in Providence. FRIARS IN TOURNAMENT PLAY...Providence has an all-time BIG EAST Tournament record of 14-18 (.438). The Friars won the championship in 1994. The highest PC has ever been seeded is fourth (1987, 1993, 1994 and 1997). The Friars were 1-1 in the tournament last year. PC has played at least two games in the tournament for the last seven years. The last time PC lost in the opening round was the 1991-92 season.
FARLEY WELL...Senior forward Justin Farley equalled a career high with 25 points and added a career high11 rebounds in the Friars' 64-62 win. Since moving into the starting lineup against Villanova (2/20) Farley is averaging 20.0 points per game with 7.7 rpg in 35.3 minutes per game.
For the season he is averaging 8.8 points and 4.0 rebounds in 21.6 minutes per contest.
FIRST TEAM ALL-BIG EAST...Jamel Thomas becomes the sixth PC player to be named First Team All-BIG EAST and the first since Austin Croshere in 1997. The Friars' All-American candidate has carried the Friars all season and is the BIG EAST's leading scorer averaging 22.1 points per game which ranks him 11th in the country. Thomas now has a career high 619 points this season, the ninth best total ever at Providence. On February 13, Thomas moved into third place on PC's all-time scoring list and now has 1,929 points in his career. The Brooklyn, New York native is now the third player in school history to lead his team in scoring and rebounding two seasons in a row. He joins Jim Hadnot (three times) and Marvin Barnes (twice) as the only players to have achieved that feat.

HOME COOKING...The Friars are now 10-5 at home this season. Over the last six-plus seasons PC is 82-31 (.726) at the Civic Center. The Friars are 41-5 (.870) in their last 46 non-conference home games in Providence dating back to the start of the 1992-93 season.
NAIL BITERS...PC's buzzer beater win against Georgetown, 64-62, on February 27th improved the Friars to 3-5 in "close" games this season "Close" games are games decided by five points or less.
MONTH BY MONTH...The Friars were 3-4 in the month of February. PC was 5-2 in November, 3-2 in December and 5-4 in January.

DAY GAMES...In PC's six games that have started before 1:00 p.m., the Friars are 2-4. PC defeated Purdue then lost to Georgetown, Arkansas, Notre Dame and Rutgers before closing the season with a win against Georgetown.
CIVIC CENTER RECORD...PC owns a 334-132 (.717) record at the Providence Civic Center since the building opened in 1972. The Friars recorded their 300th win on January 8, 1996 against Canisius (91-63).
FRIARS IN SEASON OPENERS...With the season opening loss to Vanderbilt, the Friars' all-time record in season opening games goes to 63-9. When that season opening game is at home, PC is 49-4. When the first game is on the road, the Friars are 14-5. In home openers, the Friars are 66-6 all-time. The Vanderbilt loss snapped a four-year streak of wins in season openers and a string of 13 straight home openers dating back to November 29, 1984 when the Friars lost a 70-67 decision to Assumption at the Civic Center. PC's last season opening loss came on November 26, 1993 - a 113-102 overtime loss at Oklahoma State.
BIG EAST OPENERS...The Friars' 83-80 loss to Notre Dame on December 8th extended their BIG EAST season opener's losing streak to nine straight. PC's last win to open the BIG EAST schedule came in December of 1989 against Boston College at home. The Friars are now 3-17 in BIG EAST season openers and 8-12 in their first league contest at home.

NEW HOOP STAFF...Joining Tim Welsh at Providence College are three new assistant coaches. Steve DeMeo joined Welsh on April 2nd after the two worked together at Iona. King Rice, a former standout point guard at North Carolina joins the staff after spending five years at Illinois State as an assistant. Bob Walsh comes to Providence after a year at the University of San Diego. He had served as a graduate assistant to Welsh at Iona for two years prior to taking an assistants job in San Diego. Vince Cautero takes over as the administrative assistant. He has been an assistant coach at Florida State (1988-1992) and Florida International (1992-1998).
KENDRICK MOORE SELECTED... Providence College senior guard Kendrick Moore (Hartford, Conn.) has been selected to the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for the 1998-99 school year. The SAAC is made up of dedicated, hard working student-athletes who are the voice of their fellow student-athletes within the NCAA. The committee meets three times a year in January, March and August. Moore's appointment began on September 1st.
BIG EAST STARTS...The Friars have started the BIG EAST schedule with an 0-2 mark in three of the last four seasons. PC was 0-3 in the league last year before winning in the fourth league game. The Friars have started the BIG EAST schedule with an 0-2 record or worse in 14 of the BIG EAST's 20 seasons.
TOUGH PLACES....The Friars win at the Fitzgerald Field House at Pittsburgh was just the Friars third against Pittsburgh on the Panthers home court. PC is now 3-13 at Pitt. The Friars are just 3-15 at Georgetown and 3-15 at Syracuse after winning their last two games at the Carrier Dome.
On February 3rd, PC won its first game ever at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.
HOME AND AWAY....For the first time in the 20 years of the BIG EAST, the Friars turned in a winning road record, going 5-4 away from the Providence Civic Center. For the second year in a row, the Friars were under .500 at home in BIG EAST play going 4-5. The Friars were 6-5 overall on the road this season, PC's first winning road mark since the 1988-89 season when that team went 6-4 away from the Providence Civic Center.
NEXT FOR THE FRIARS...If the Friars defeat Georgetown, they will play the #2-seed, Miami at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. That game will be televised on ESPN2.

The Friars' Team MVP as a junior, the Brooklyn, New York native leads the Friars in scoring (619 points) and rebounding (208) to become just the third player in school history to lead his team in rebounding and scoring two or more years in a row. Jim Hadnot and Marvin Barnes are the others. Both those numbers are career highs for Thomas. Earlier this season, Thomas became PC's all-time leader in three-point field goals (196) and three-point attempts (570). He is third on the Friars' all-time scoring list with 1,929 points.

AMONG THE BEST...Jamel Thomas moved into third on PC's all-time scoring list with 16 points on February 13th versus Miami. He passed Joey Hassett (1,828) and Marvin Barnes (1,839). DOUBLE FIGURES...Jamel Thomas had his streak of double figure games snapped against Georgetown (2/27/99). He had scored in double figures in 60 consecutive games dating back to March 7, 1997 against Villanova during his sophomore season.

FOUR-TIME BIG EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK...Jamel Thomas was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week for the week ending February 22nd. This is the most-ever for a PC player as Eric Murdock was selected three times during the 1990-91 season. Thomas had a career high 38 points versus Villanova including 12 of PC's 14 in overtime. He also had 21 points and nine rebounds in the February 15th loss to St. John's. He has also won the award November 18th, December 7th and January 17th. This is the sixth time in his career that he has been honored by the BIG EAST.

HALFTIME LEADS...The Friars have led at halftime in 16 of their first 28 games this season. Arkansas had the biggest lead at the half this season (57-31) while St. John's had a 25-point lead (51-26). In the other ten games, PC trailed by 11 or less. PC is 12-4 when the Friars lead at halftime and 4-8 when they trail.
BOARD GAMES...The Friars have been outrebounded in five of their last six games by a 261-201 (-60 or 10.0 per game) margin. UConn outrebounded the Friars by the biggest margin this season 44-22 (19). The one game they weren't outrebounded, the teams were even --- 43-43 versus Villanova.
SUPERPESTS...Keep an eye on Friar guards John Linehan and Corey Wright. Despite their size (5-9 and 5-8 respectively), they have a way of getting under their opponents skin. Combined, the dynamic duo is averaging 8.9 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 7.5 apg and 4.9 steals per game. These two have combined for 142 steals this year (5.1 per game). With 52 steals in the first 28 games, Corey Wright is now fourth on the Friars' all-time steals list with 180 in 92 games.
MORE WRIGHT...Senior guard Corey Wright has become a scoring threat for the Friars this season. Through 28 games, Wright has scored 128 points, surpassing his career high of 117 points set as a sophomore in 36 games. He is averaging 4.6 points per game on the year. In the November 24th win over North Carolina State, Wright poured in a career high 14 points going 3 from the floor with a career high seven free throws in a career high eight attempts. He also had a career high seven assists in the win with three steals.
MAD MAX...Sophomore center Erron Maxey continues to be a force on the boards for the Friars. He collected his third double-double of the season in the win at Syracuse with 14 points and 12 rebounds. It was the fourth double-double of his career. At Rutgers in December, Maxey pulled down a career high 13 rebounds in his second double-double of the year.

Brisport was signed in the November signing period after playing two seasons at Los Angeles Valley Community College. An All-California JC selection last season, Brisport averaged 22.5 points and eight rebounds per game last year.
MORE BRISPORT...Leon Brisport turned in his best game as a Friar in the loss to Miami. The 6-9, 225-pound forward turned in career highs in points (10), rebounds (6) and minutes played (19). For the season he is averaging 3.3 points per game and 2.5 rebounds.

REBOUNDING MARKS...Jamel Thomas' 14 rebounds at Syracuse were his career best in a a BIG EAST game. The 51 rebounds recorded by the Friars against the Orange was a season best for PC.
HIGH SCORERS....West Virginia guard Jarett Kearse joined Notre Dame freshman Troy Murphy, Cleveland State's James Madison and TCU's Lee Nailon as players that have scored 30 or more points against the Friars this season.

Madison is the first player to score 33 or more points on the Friars since December 21, 1995 when Reggie Freeman lit the PC up for 37 points in a 92-83 loss at Texas.
WILD WEST VIRGINIA...PC and West Virginia set several BIG EAST records in the 90-87 overtime win on January 5th. The 59 free throws taken by the Friars is a BIG EAST and Providence College record. The previous record for the Friars was 55 set against Alaska-Fairbanks in the 1996 Top of the World Classic. West Virginia's 41 fouls was a BIG EAST record as were the 39 overtime points that the two teams combined for. The Mountaineers had six players foul out while the Friars had two. Providence was 16-21 from the free throw line in overtime.
FREE THROWS VERSUS WVU...In PC's two games against West Virginia this season, the Friars have shot 101 free throws making 72 of them for a .713 success rate.
50 OR BETTER...PC shot over 50% (50.8%) in the win over Boston College on January 17. That marked the fourth time this season that PC has shot 50% or better in a game. The Friars are 4-0 when they hit half their shots or more.
HOG HIGHS...Arkansas scored 118 points the most ever by an opponent versus the Friars. The 15-three pointers Arkansas scored were the most ever by an opponent. The 45 field goals equalled the most ever by an opponent versus PC. Arkansas' 29 assists were a season high against Providence and the 26 turnovers by the Friars were a season high. Arkansas' 52 rebounds were the most this season by a PC opponent.
THREE POINTS...Sean Connolly has hit 58 three-pointers this season, the most ever by a PC freshman. He is tied for seventh on the single season list for most three pointers. He also has a shot to be the Friars' highest scoring freshman scorer ever. He is averaging 10.9 per game with the PC record being 12.3. That mark was set in the 1944-45 season by Leo Labossiere. Only seven freshman in Providence College history have averaged 10.0 or more points in their first season.
HOT CAMAH...Sophomore guard Jamaal Camah has found the hot hand for the Friars in recent games off the PC bench. In his last nine games, the Salem, Massachusetts native has scored 65 points (7.2 ppg) with 27 rebounds (3.0 per game) in 17.4 minutes per game. In the Georgetown win, Camah was a career best 5-for-5 from the free throw line and pulled down a career high six rebounds.

QUICK HANDS...PC's guard tandem of John Linehan and Corey Wright have given the best in the BIG EAST trouble the past two seasons.
