PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College senior guard John Linehan (Chester, Pa.) was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches' First Team All-District 1 squad on Tuesday, February 12. Linehan, who earned NABC Second Team All-District 1 accolades last year, became the first Friar to earn First Team honors since Jamel Thomas was named to the First Team in 1999.

Linehan, who leads the nation in steals (113) and is second in the nation in average steals per game (4.5 steals per game), is 18 steals shy of former Friar Eric Murdock's NCAA record for career steals (376). Linehan ranks third all-time in NCAA history with 359 career steals. This season, he has set the BIG EAST single-game record for steals (11) and he established the BIG EAST career record for steals with 205. Linehan also set the Providence College single-game record for steals (11) and established the Friar single-season record for steals with 113.

The 5-9 senior guard is third on the team in scoring this season, averaging 12.4 points per game. He is six rebounds shy of becoming only the second Providence player ever to record 100 or more steals, rebounds and assists in one season. Linehan has registered 113 steals, 111 assists and 94 rebounds this season.

Linehan joins 149 other student-athletes from around the country (15 districts) who are now eligible for the NABC/Pontiac Division I All-American Team to be announced at the conclusion of the 2001-2002 NCAA men's basketball season.
