Jan. 20, 2014

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - It was announced today (January 20) that Providence College senior guard Bryce Cotton (Tucson, Ariz.) was named BIG EAST Player of the Week. Cotton, who earned 2013 All-BIG EAST First Team honors after leading the league in scoring (19.7 ppg), received Player of the Week accolades after helping the Friars earn two wins last week. He is the first Friar to be named BIG EAST Player of the Week since Kadeem Batts earned the honor on February 11, 2013.

He was named Player of the Week after he averaged 22 points, 6.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists in two league wins last week. He also played all 90 minutes of the Friars' two games. The senior guard nearly had a triple double when scored a game-high 21 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished off eight assists in the Friars' 84-83 double overtime win at St. John's on January 16. Two days later, Cotton scored a game-high 23 points and registered six assists as the Friars defeated No. 20/19 Creighton, 81-68, and handed the Bluejays their first ever BIG EAST loss. Cotton leads the BIG EAST in assists (5.8) and minutes played (39.3 mpg). He also ranks second in scoring in the BIG EAST (20.4 ppg).

Cotton's 23 points in the Friars' win over No. 20/19 Creighton on January 18 marked the eighth consecutive game and the 12th time this season that he has scored 20 or more points in a contest. It also was the 40th time in his career he that has accomplished the feat. Cotton has scored 20 or more points in 35 percent of the games in his collegiate career.

It is the third Player of the Week honor for Cotton as he was named College Sports BIG EAST Player of the Week and NetScouts Basketball National Player of the Week today as well.
