Men's Hoops Hosts Villanova Thursday
Jan. 19, 2000 PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Tonight's game is the 68th meeting in the all-time series between the two schools and the first of two meetings this season between Providence and Villanova. The two teams will also play on March 1 at the Pavilion at Villanova. The Wildcats lead the all-time series by a 39-28 margin. In Providence, PC has a 17-12 edge in the series. At Villanova, the Wilcats have the upper hand, 21-9 and on neutral courts, Villanova also leads, 6-2. The Friars have won the last three meetings in the series, including two last season. On January 26th in Providence, PC took an 85-72 win. On February 20th, PC won at Villanova, 90-84 in overtime. PC has won eight straight versus Villanova at the Providence Civic Center since that game. HOUSE OF HORRORS...For the Villanova Wildcats, the Providence Civic Center was a house of horrors during the 1990's. After winning a 102-74 decision over the Friars on January 13, 1990, the Wildcats never won in Providence again during the decade. PC closed out the 90's with eight straight wins over Villanova at the Providence Civic Center including last year's 85-72 win. INJURED LIST...Junior guard John Linehan is out of the lineup after reaggravating his groin injury that required surgery in October. He is expected to miss at least two more weeks. BACK IN ACTION...Freshman forward Marcus Jefferson will return to the Friars' lineup tonight after missing eight games with a stress fracture in his left foot. The 6-5 forward last played on December 7th versus Rhode Island. In eight games this season, Jefferson is averaging 6.6 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.

STREAKING FRIARS...The win over Georgetown closed out the Friars' six-game homestand with a 4-2 record. PC has lost two in a row and three of its last four games. The Friars are 3-3 in their last six and have won eight of 13 since starting the season with a 1-3 record. KARIM'S SUPREME...Karim Shabazz recorded the first triple-double at Providence in 22 years on Monday, December 27th with his 25 points/15 rebounds/10 blocks game versus Long Island. The last triple-double recorded by a Friar was done by Bob Misevicius on January 11, 1977 versus Connecticut when he had 14 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists in an 86-71 win. Shabazz becomes just one of four players at PC ever to record ten blocks in a game and the first since Bob Cooper had ten versus Michigan on December 29, 1976. The record is 12 by Marvin Barnes who had three games with ten or more and James Hadnot had 10 in the 1960 NIT versus St. Louis. TRIPLE THE FUN...Since 1960, the record books show that Providence College has recorded six triple-doubles. Here's the list:
There have been just nine triple doubles in the 21 seasons of the BIG EAST. The last was done by St. John's Ron Artest (13 pts./12 rebs./11 asts.) versus St. John's on 1/9/99. HOME AND AWAY....During the 1998-1999 season, the Friars turned in their first winning road record in BIG EAST play in the league's first 20 years. The Friars were 5-4 away from the Civic Center in league games. So far this season, the Friars are 1-0 at home and 0-2 on the road. NAIL BITERS...The Friars saw their record go to 1-4 in "close" games after the January 8th loss at Boston College (62-67). The Friars' lone win in a "close" one came in overtime against Massachusetts (12/30/99) by a 61-60 margin. PC's other "close losses have come at North Carolina State (60-64), versus Central Connecticut (50-54) and versus Fordham (67-71). PC was 3-6 last year in "close" games. "Close" games are games decided by five or less points. IN OVERTIME...PC's 61-60 overtime win versus Massachusetts gives the Friars three consecutive overtime wins dating back to the 1998-99 season. PC was 2-0 in overtime last year. The Friars last loss in overtime came in the NCAA Quarterfinals in 1997 when they lost to Arizona, 96-92. FRIARS IN NON-CONFERENCE GAMES...With the loss to Fordham on January 2nd, PC finished the 1999-2000 non-conference schedule with a 7-6 record. The last time PC lost six non-conference games was in the 1984-85 season when that team was also 7-6. OUT OF ACTION...Junior guard John Linehan is back on the sidelines after re-aggravating a groin injury that has plagued him all season. Linehan's injury problems started on October 25th when he underwent surgery for a sports hernia. Following two more surgeries for a blood clot and an infection, PC's superpest missed the Friars' first five games. He returned on November 30th versus Boston University and played in four games before getting hurt against Central Connecticut. The Chester, Pa. native missed the Arkansas and Long Island games before returning against Massachusetts. He played in that game and against Fordham before going out of the lineup late in the second half. He has missed the Georgetown and Boston College games. To date, Lenihan has played in six games and is averaging 5.2 ppg with 3.0 rpg, 3.5 assists and 2.8 steals per game. FRIARS IN SEASON OPENERS...The loss to Holy Cross in the November 20th home opener gives PC a 63-10 record in season opening games in the school's 73-year basketball history. The loss was also the Friars' first home opening loss since November 29, 1984 when PC lost to Assumption, 70-67. That broke a streak of 14 consecutive home opening wins. The Friars are now 49-5 in opening games at home and 14-5 in road openers. PC lost its opening game last year to Vanderbilt, but the game was part of the CoSIDA Classic and the Civic Center was considered a neutral court. BIG EAST OPENERS...The Friars win over Georgetown on January 5th (55-48) snapped a nine-game PC losing streak in BIG EAST season openers. The last time that PC opened the BIG EAST schedule with a win was on December 21, 1989 when they defeated Boston College, 85-66 in Providence. The Friars are now 4-17 all-time in BIG EAST season openers and 9-12 in BIG EAST season home openers. HIGHS AND LOWS...The 43 points scored by the Friars in the 54-43 loss to Holy Cross (11/20/99) is the fewest points the Friars have scored in a game since December 27, 1982 when they lost by an identical 54-43 score to the University of Hawaii in the Rainbow Classic. Just one week later, the Friars set the school's single game scoring mark with 120 points versus American University - Puerto Rico. FRIARS FOR THREE...The Friars hit on a season high 11 three-pointers in the victory over American-Puerto Rico. They then followed that with a 10-for-20 performance versus Boston University. FOR THE RECORDS...The Friars' 120-point outburst against American University of Puerto Rico sets the single game mark for points in a game. The previous mark was 118 and was set on January 20th, 1973 in a 118-88 win over Western Kentucky. PC's 50 field goals versus American also set a school mark. The previous best of 48 was done four times with the last one coming on December 18, 1976 versus Brown University. FINDING THE RANGE...Two of the Friars newest players recorded career highs in the win over American University. Freshman guard Abdul Mills scored 20 points and freshman forward Romuald Augustin scored a season high 15 points, getting 13 of those in the first half. ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM...Junior forward Erron Maxey was chosen to the All-Tournament team at the Puerto Rico Shootout. In three games, Maxey scored 61 points (20.3 ppg) and had 22 rebounds (7.3 rpg). The Friars' team captain set personal bests with 12 field goals and 25 points in the win over American University. MAXEY-MUM EFFORT....Junior forward Erron Maxey played a season low 22 minutes versus Massachusetts due to foul trouble and eventually fouling out of the game. He had seven points and seven rebounds. At Boston College, Maxey again had foul problems as he was held to a season low five points and one rebound. That marked just the third time in 16 games that he has not scored in double figures this season. For the season, Maxey has recorded five double-doubles and he now has ten for his career. Maxey has also recorded career highs this season for points (25 versus American-Puerto Rico) and rebounds (18 versus Brown). Maxey has led the Friars in scoring and rebounding in nine of 16 games this season. He leads the team in scoring with 15.4 ppg and is second in rebounds with 8.4 boards per game. His five double-doubles rank him fourth among BIG EAST players MAXEY DOUBLE-DOUBLES:
SHAZZAM SHABAZZ...Karim Shabazz has wasted little time making his presence known in the Friars' lineup. The 7-2 center has scored in double figures in five of his first seven games since becoming eligible on December 23rd. He was held to nine points versus Georgetown after playing just 20 minutes due to getting in foul trouble. Shabbazz is averaging 15.0 ppg and 10.0 rebounds. He recorded his third double-double (one triple-double) on the season at Boston College when he had 15 points and a career high 16 rebounds. SHABAZZ DOUBLE-DOUBLES:
WADE-ING INTO THE ACTION...Junior guard Donta Wade found the scoring touch with a career high 24-point night in PC's win over Arkansas. Wade was 8-for-13 from the floor with a career best 6-for-8 game from beyond the three-point line and added a pair of free throws in 24 minutes off the bench. The junior college transfer got off to a slow start for the Friars scoring just nine points in PC's first four games. He found the range in Puerto Rico with 19 points off the bench going 7-11 FG and 5-7 3PTers. In his last 12 games, Wade has scored 121 points (10.0 points per game). MR. ROGERS NEIGHBORHOOD...Junior guard Chris Rogers played his best game of the season at Boston College getting a career high 12 points off the bench in a career high 30 minutes of playing time. Rogers was 4-8 FG, 2-3 3PT and 2-2 from the line. MURRAY MANIA...Junior forward David Murray scored a career high 16 points to lead the Friars in scoring versus Rutgers. The Bronx, New York native was 7-11 from the floor and made both of his free throws. While the Friars have struggled at the foul line in recent games, Murray has made eight consecutive free throws and ten of his last 12 dating back to PC's overtime win versus Massachusetts. In that game, Murray scored the winning bucket with just 1.3 seconds left in overtime. He also played a career high 39 minutes in the game. THE SHOT BLOCKERS...With the addition of David Murray and Karim Shabazz to the PC lineup, there has been a steady increase in blocked shots. Last season, PC recorded 65 blocks in 30 games for a 2.2 blocks per game average. This season, through the first 16 games, the Friars already have 84 blocks (5.3 per game). Erron Maxey led the team with 19 last season. Shabazz already has 28 in four games while David Murray has rejected 23 already this year. Maxey has added 15. CAN YOU SAY OLD SCHOOL...PC and Georgetown squared off in an old-time BIG EAST clash on January 5th in Providence with the Friars taking a 55-48 decision. Erron Maxey led the Friars with 17 points and eight rebounds. Defenses dominated the game as the Friars held Georgetown to just .300 shooting (18-60) and forced 20 turnovers. PC shot just .390 (23-59) on the night. Providence led 30-15 at the half, saw Georgetown cut the lead to one at 46-45 with 3:31 left then held on for the win. Georgetown won the battle of the boards by a 44-41 margin. SLAMMING THE DOOR...PC's relentless defense against Georgetown held the Hoyas to a season low 48 points, one better than the 49 that the Friars held Rhode Island to on December 7th. The Friars forced the Hoyas into shooting just 30% for the night on 18-for-60 shooting from the floor. Georgetown also committed 20 turnovers in the game. The 48 points is the fewest points a PC team has surrendered in Tim Welsh's two seasons guiding the Black and White. The last time PC held a team to less than 48 points was the 1997-98 season when PC held Brown to 33 points in a 67-33 win. FIRST HALF MAGIC...The Friars held Georgetown to just six field goals and 15 points in the first half of the 55-48 win on January 5th. The 15 points was the second fewest ever given up by the Friars in a BIG EAST game as they held Connecticut to 15 on February 1, 1982. The fewest points a PC team has ever given up in a half is 12 and that occured versus the Crescent Athletic Club on January 1, 1927. BOARD PROBLEMS...After being outrebounded by a 164-133 margin in the previous four games, PC took over the glass versus Boston College winning the battle of the boards by a 41-30 margin. Prior to that, PC was outrebounded by Long Island, 40-36. Against Massachusetts, the Friars trailed in the rebound column by a 49-32 margin, including 26 offensive rebounds by the Minutemen. Fordham won the battle of the boards by a 35-20 margin. Georgetown narrowly won the battle of the boards by a 44-41 margin. On the season, the Friars have been outrebounded in nine of their 15 games. PROTECTING THE BALL...Has been a problem for the Friars in the first 16 games this season. Four times this year, the Friars have turned the ball over 26 times in a game. PC turned the ball over 26 times in the loss at Boston College, including eight in the final five minutes of the game. For the season, the Friars have turned the ball over 303 times for 18.9 turnovers per game. The Friars have forced 323 turnovers on the year for a 20.1 average per game for their opponents. FREE THROW WOES...PC made just 10-of-21 free throws in the 71-61 loss at Rutgers including just three-of-11 in the second half. On the season, the Friars have made just 174-of-289 free throws for a .602 shooting percentage from the line. Versus Georgetown on January 5th, the Friars were just 7-for-18 (.389) from the free throw line and against Fordham, PC was 8-13 (.615) from the charity stripe. Over the last four games, PC is 26-for-50 (.520). Last season, the Friars shot .766 from the foul line. BATTLING THE BUG...PC center Karim Shabazz was held scoreless in the game at Rutgers as he battled the flu. Despite the illness, Shabazz played a team high 30 minutes, grabbed six rebounds and equalled a career high with five assists in the loss to the Scarlet Knights.
