Friars Open Preseason with Mal Brown Scrimmage
PROVIDENCE, RI -- The Providence College basketball teams tipped off the 1997-98 season on Sunday afternoon with the annual Mal Brown Scrimmage in PC's Alumni Hall.
In the men's scrimmage, Coach Pete Gillen's squad played a pair of 15 minute games. The White team prevailed in both games winning 23-22 in the first and 24-23 in the second game. Jamel Thomas playing for the White team in both games led both teams in scoring with a combined 16 points and five rebounds. T.J. McKenzie led the Black team in the first game going four-for-five from the floor for eight points and and two rebounds. Junior transfer, Justin Farley led the Black squad in the second game with 10 points and six rebounds. His last second shot at the buzzer almost gave the Black team a come-from-behind win.
Ndongo N'Diaye scored six points with six rebounds for the White team in the first game and finished the day with eight points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Llewellyn Cole had five points and seven rebounds in two halves with the Black squad. Freshmen Erron Maxey (four points and seven rebounds) played both halves with the Black team and Ben Perkins (seven points and three rebounds) split time between the two teams.
The Friars open the preseason schedule on Saturday, November 8th when they face the Washington AAU team in a 7:30 p.m. game. PC then hosts the Around the World All-Stars on Wednesday, November 12th at the Civic Center in a 7:30 p.m. game before opening the season on Tuesday, November 18th with the University of Vermont. The season opener is a 7:30 p.m. game.
In the women's scrimmage, senior guard Mandy Saunders led all scorers with 15 points and six assists as the White squad defeated the Black squad, 54-52. Junior Tavia Horton hit a foul line jumper as time ran out to give the Black Team the edge. Freshman Dani Trippany added 13 points and freshman Jen Gombotz added 12 for the winners. The Lady Friars open with an Exhibition Game vs. Nor'easter Storm on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7:00 pm in Alumni Hall.
