Men's Basketball Loses To Seton Hall 81-80 In 2OT

    PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by Seton Hall, 81-80, in double overtime, on Tuesday, Dec 31 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Pirates' redshirt-sophomore Sterling Gibbs made a pair of free throws with four seconds left in the second extra session to give SHU the win.

    Providence senior Bryce Cotton (Tucson, Ariz.) scored a game-high 25 points, while sophomore Tyler Harris (Dix Hills, N.Y.) poured in 22 points. Cotton also had five assists and played the full 50 minutes. Harris grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

    It was the Friars' first double overtime game since Feb. 15, 2005 against UConn. Almost 30 years ago Providence and Seton Hall also played in double overtime in their conference opener on Jan. 4, 1984.

    There were ties 11 ties and 16 lead changes. It also was the first loss by PC at home (7-1) this season.

    Following the first 20 minutes of action, Providence trailed by two 30-28. At the end of regulation, the contest was tied at 58. Junior forward LaDontae Henton (Lansing, Mich.) drove to the basket with 33 seconds remaining and was able to finish off the glass, to tie the game at 58-58.

    Each team scored eight points in the first overtime.

    In the first overtime, Senior guard Bryce Cotton (Tucson, Ariz.) hit two free throws with 5.9 remaining to tie the game at 66-66. Seton Hall's Fuquan Edwin drove to the basket but was denied by two Friars as the time expired.
