PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars concluded their non-conference season with an 83-78 win over Saint Peter's College on Monday, December 31 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence. PC, which ended its non-conference slate with a 9-3 mark, will open its BIG EAST season on Thursday, January 3 at Marquette.
The Friars opened up the game with a 16-7 lead after five minutes of action. However, that would prove to be the largest lead the Friars would have all game as the pesky Peacocks kept the game close and never let the Friars pull away. Saint Peter's used some strong shooting by guard Raul Orta to take a four point lead (33-29) with 6:43 remaining in the first half. The Friars regained the lead but Saint Peter's closed the half with a 5-0 run over the final 2:06 to enter halftime with a 45-44 lead. Junior Randall Hanke (New York, N.Y.) led the Friars with 15 of his game-high 23 point in the first 20 minutes of action.
In the second half, the game went back and forth as the Friars' lead never grew larger than seven points. Orta hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to three points with 26 seconds left, but junior Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) made two free-throws to give PC an 83-78 lead and Saint Peter's was not able to score again.
In addition to scoring 23 points, Hanke also added a game-high 14 rebounds in the win. Junior Jeff Xavier (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored 18 points and Efejuku registered 14 for the Friars. Freshman Jamine Peterson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) played a strong game off the bench with nine points and nine rebounds.
The Friars shot an impressive 61.3 percent for the first half and 45.7 percent for the game. Providence dominated on the boards as they finished with 50 rebounds, including 35 in the second half.
