PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - David Murray sank the winning layup with 1.3 seconds left in overtime to lift Providence over Massachusetts 61-60 Thursday.

With 16 seconds left in regulation, Massachusetts' Winston Smith scored his only two points of the game on a 16-foot jumpshot to tie the score at 56. On Providence's next possession, a 3-point attempt by John Linehan missed as time expired in regulation.

Monte Mack led all scorers with 22 points for Massachusetts (6-6). Murray and Karim Shabazz each scored 14 points for Providence (7-5), and Donta Wade added 13.

Wade hit a 3-pointer with 7:17 left to tie the score at 48. Neither team led by more than two points the rest of the game.

In overtime, a steal and basket by Mack tied the score at 59 with 1:21 left. Shannon Crooks made a free throw with 27.7 seconds left to put Massachusetts ahead 60-59.

As Providence set up the next play, the ball squirted loose and after a scramble by several players, Murray picked the ball up and scored the winning basket.

The Friars, which held a 32-27 lead at intermission, now lead the series between the two teams 22-5.
