PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Karim Shabazz scored 25 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked 10 shots as Providence beat Long Island 79-63 Monday.

Shabazz also led all players in assists with five. Erron Maxey added 19 points for Providence (6-5).

Antawn Dobie scored 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting for Long Island (2-5). Virgil Smiley scored 15 points for Long Island.

Long Island (2-5) led only once, 2-0, on a Richie Parker dunk in the first minute. Shabazz, a 7-foot-2 center playing in just his second game after transferring from Florida State, took over by scoring six straight points, including two dunks.

By halftime, Shabazz had already amassed 15 points, 8 rebounds, 4 blocked shots and 3 assists as the Friars took a 42-29 lead. The Blackbirds never got closer than 14 points the rest of the game.

Long Island shot just 39 percent for the game and committed 22 turnovers.
