PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College Friars (6-3) defeated cross-town rival Brown (5-4), 70-51, Sunday, December 9 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. PC never trailed in the game.
Junior Randall Hanke (New York, N.Y.), sophomore Brian McKenzie and freshman Jamine Peterson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) all tallied 13 points for the Friars. Junior Jeff Xavier (Pawtucket, R.I.) pitched in 11 points. Mark McAndrew led the Bears with 15 points.
Junior Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) finished with seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Hanke led Providence in scoring in the first half with nine points. McKenzie added eight and McDermott tallied seven points in the first 20 minutes.
The Friars converted six of their first seven field goals and opened a 13-6 lead. PC finished the first half shooting 58 percent (14-24) from the field. Brown struggled as it shot 33 percent (8-24), and four of the Bears' first six made field goals were threes.
After PC opened a 23-12 lead at the 9:21 mark, Brown fought back to within four at 26-22 with 4:12 before the halftime buzzer. The Friars converted four of their final five field goals to fuel a 9-3 run and extend their lead to 35-25 at the half.
The Friars started the second half cold, not registering a field goal until the 15:48 mark. PC converted six of their next seven to open a 50-39 lead with 11:48 remaining.
Providence finished the game shooting 50 percent (27-54) while the Bears finished at a 33 percent clip (17-51). The Friars held the rebounding advantage 37-31 and tallied 34 points in the paint.
The Friars return to action on Dec. 19 against Sacred Heart at the Dunkin' Donuts Center with the opening tip set for 7:30 p.m.
