KINGSTON, R.I. - The Providence Friars (5-2) were defeated by the Rhode Island Rams (9-1), 77-60, in front of a sellout crowd at the Ryan Center in Kingston, R.I. on Tuesday, December 4. Sophomore Brian McKenzie (Brooklyn, N.Y) led the way for Providence with a team-high 12 points.
The Friars trailed for the first 15 minutes of the game before going on an 8-0 run to take their first lead at 24-21 with five minutes remaining in the half. Junior Jeff Xavier (Pawtucket, R.I.) sparked the Providence run with back-to-back three pointers. The Rams retook the lead one minute later and went into the lockerroom with a 33-28 lead.
PC trailed by 12 five minutes into the second half due to a 9-0 run by the Rams. Providence came right back with a 9-2 run of there own to cut the Rhode Island lead to five with 12 minutes to play. The Rams pushed their lead to 18 (69-51) by going on a 13-1 run with under three minutes reamining.
The Friars won the rebounding battle (42-38) but were limited to just 30 percent shooting from the floor and 23 percent from three-point land. Junior Jonathan Kale (Mattapan, Mass.) also scored double-figures for Providence with 11 points and also grabbed nine rebounds. Sophomore Dwain Williams (San Diego, Calif.) also added 11 points.
The Friars will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. on Thursday, December 6 to take part in the BIG EAST/SEC Invitational with a game against South Carolina at 7:00 p.m. at the Wachovia Center.
