COLUMBIA S.C.-- The Providence College Friar men's basketball team
defeated South Carolina, 76-67, on Thursday, December 1, at the
Colonial Life Center in Columbia, S.C. The win improved the Friars to
6-2 in non conference play. South Carolina drops to 2-5.
In the first half, Providence's defense held the Gamecocks to just 30.8% shooting from the field. Junior Vincent Council (Brooklyn N.Y.) led the Friars with
11 points and two assists at the half. Freshman LaDontae Henton (Lansing, Mich.) and sophomore Gerard Coleman (Boston, Mass.) each had seven points, while junior Forward Bilal Dixon (Jersey City,N.J.) scored six points, grabbed four rebounds, and had four blocked shots to pace the Friars to a 34-27 lead.
In the second half, a drive by Henton which ended up as a three point play helped open the Friar lead to 12 with 4:45 to go. The Gamecocks made 7-0 run with just two minutes left, to bring the score to 65-58. A defensive rebound and a outlet to Vincent Council, who drove the lane and dished it to Dixon for the dunk ended the Gamecocks run.
Overall, the Friars had five player's score in double digit figures. Henton led the Friars with 18 points and eight rebounds. Council ended his night with 16 points and six assists. Coleman went 7-9 from the free throw line and scored 15 points. Sophomore Bryce Cotton (Tucson. Ariz.) chipped in with 13 points.
Bilal Dixon scored 10 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and blocked 7 shots
in just 21 minutes of play.
Providence College will return to action on Monday, December 5, when they host Brown University at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. and will be televised on Cox Sports.
