Men's Basketball Earns A 76-72 Win At Northeastern

BOSTON, Mass.- The Providence College men's basketball team (5-2) defeated Northeastern (2-3) by a score of 76-72 on Tuesday, December 1 at Matthews Arena. Senior Sharaud Curry (Gainsesville, Ga.) led the Friars with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooing from the field and 3-3 from behind the arc. The Friars jumped out to a 17-10 lead at the 12:11 mark in the first half as their full-court press defense led to back-to-back steals and layups by freshman Duke Mondy (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and junior Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.). Providence increased its lead to 11 points, 35-24, as freshman Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) converted a three-point play by finishing a fast break layup and hitting the foul shot. The Friars were able to enter the half with a 40-29 lead as Curry hit a deep three-pointer with three seconds remaining in the half. Curry finished the half, leading the Friars with 13 points. In the second half the Huskies cut the lead to seven, 50-43, as NU converted on back-to-back turnovers by the Friars. Out of a Providence timeout at the 14:16 mark, Northeastern changed its defense to a 2-3 zone. The Friars were able to attack the zone as Council hit a pull-up jumper from the foul line with two seconds remaining on the shot clock to score two of his 11 points. On the next possession Brooks pulled up and hit a three pointer with three seconds remaining. With 3:16 remaining in the game Northeastern's Baptiste Bataille hit a three and started a 9-0 run for the Huskies. Chaisson Allen quickly converted two steals into back-to-back layups to cut the Friar lead to six, 74-68. Nkem Ojougboh knocked down two foul shots with 50 seconds remaining in the game to cut the once 13-point Friar lead to two. With 15:1 seconds remaining in the game and one second remaining on the shot clock junior Jamine Peterson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored on a baseline-out of bounds play, with an assist to Council. Peterson, who ended the game with 18 points and nine rebounds, quickly tipped in the inbound pass from four feet away from the hoop. Dixon and Brooks also scored in double figures for the Friars as they registered 11 and 10 points, respectively. Matt Janning led the Huskies with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting. The Friars are back in action on Saturday, December 5 at 1:00 p.m. The team will travel to Kingston, R.I. to face intra-state rival Rhode Island. The game will mark the 120th meeting in the PC -URI series, which Providence holds the advantage 66-53.
