    PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence Friars (4-1) defeated the Maine Black Bears (3-4), 78-48, Tuesday, November 27 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Junior Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) paced the Friars with 17 points and 13 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.

    McDermott made his first six baskets and finished the first half with 12 of the Friars' 37 points. McDermott also pulled down 10 rebounds in the first 20 minutes. Providence used a 14-2 run midway through the half to gain a 12-point lead at the intermission.

    Junior Jeff Xavier (Pawtucket, R.I.) and sophomore Brian McKenzie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each added six first-half points. PC held a 37-25 lead at halftime. Maine's 25 points was its second lowest first-half offensive output this season.

    Providence used a 10-2 run to open the second half. The Friars built a 29-point lead at the 11:08 mark and extended that to 35 points with three and a half minutes left in regulation.

    Junior Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) posted 14 points. McKenzie chipped in 13 points and sophomore Dwain Williams (San Diego, Calif.) added 10 points.

    The Friars shot 43 percent for the game and won the rebounding battle 40-35. PC forced 23 turnovers and turned them into 20 points. Providence also canned nine three-pointers.

    PC returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 1 at the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston, Mass., in the inaugural Hartford Hall of Fame Showcase. The Friars will take on Boston College at 6:00 p.m. in a nationally televised contest shown live on ESPN Classic.
