ST. THOMAS, U.S.V.I. -- The Providence College Friars were defeated in the championship game of the Paradise Jam by the Maryland Terrapins, 56-52, on Monday, November 25. It was the Friars' first loss of the season as the team fell to 6-1.

Providence came out slow in the first half and sputtered on offense, which allowed Maryland to enter halftime with a 33-21 lead.

In the second half, the Friar offense fed off its strong defense and began to dig out of a 19-point deficit (44-25) with 12:49 left in the game. With 1:31 left in the game, senior Bryce Cotton (Tucson, Ariz.) hit two free throws to get the Friars within two points ((51-49). However, tournament MVP Dez Wells converted on a jumper the lead back to four points. The Friars were not able to close out the deficit and Maryland hung on for the 56-52 win.

Cotton led all scorers with 19 points. Junior LaDontae Henton (Lansing, Mich.) and sophomore Tyler Harris (Dix Hills, N.Y.) each added 10 points for the Friars.

Dez Wells and Evan Smotrycz each added 13 points to lead Maryland.

Harris was named to the All-Tournament.

The Friars will return to action on Friday, November 29 versus Fairfield at 12:30 p.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
