PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College men's basketball returned to Providence after their trip to Puerto Rico and defeated the Fairfield Stags, 66-47, on Friday, Nov. 23. It was the 32nd time the Friars have defeated the Stags, and the second time for Coach Ed Cooley who spent five seasons as the head coach of Fairfield. The Friars improved their record to 4-2 with the win.
Providence led by as many as nine points and held the lead for the entire first half of play. Fairfield went scoreless in the last six minutes of play of the half. The Friars were on top at halftime, 25-17, after an impressive under the basket shot from junior Bryce Cotton (Tucson, Ariz.) at the buzzer. Cotton led the team with seven points.
After a quick basket to start the second half, Fairfield was held eight minutes without a field goal leading to a 17-2 Providence run. The Stags chipped away at the score, but were only able to get within 16 points. Fairfield's leading scorer was Derek Needham, who finished with 18 points.
Cotton led the Friars in scoring with 21 points. Sophomore LaDontae Henton (Lansing, Mich.) finished with 15 points. Henton has finished in double-figures in every game this season. Freshman Josh Fortune (Hampton, Va.) hit double figures for the third time this season and finished with 10 points. Junior Lee Goldsbrough (Newcastle, England) had a career high of nine points and added eight rebounds.
The Friars will play their next game at home on Tuesday, Nov. 27 against Holy Cross at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. For tickets, click here, visit the box office in Alumni Hall or call (401) 865-GOPC (4672) for more information.
