Providence, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team (3-1) defeated the University of Maine (3-1) by a score of 83-62 on Saturday, November 22 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Senior Jeff Xavier (Pawtucket, R.I.) led PC with 23 points and added three steals in the team's third-straight win. PC never trailed in the game. The Friars opened the game on a 12-4 run behind a strong inside presence, with all of the PC points coming in the paint. Three-pointers on four consecutive possessions by Providence gave the team a 28-9 advantage with 11:24 to go in the half, including three treys by Xavier. A three-point play by junior Brian McKenzie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) put the Friars ahead 36-18 at the 8:26 mark and Providence entered the intermission with a 50-32 lead. Xavier led PC with 16 first-half points and was 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. As a team, the Friars shot 41.2 percent from three-point range and committed only one turnover in the half. An alley-oop from Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) to Randall Hanke (New York, N.Y.) made the score 58-42 at the 13:45 mark of the second half. The play was the start of a 10-2 run that extended the Friars' lead to 66-44 with 11:15 to go in the game. A thunderous dunk by sophomore Marshon Brooks (Stone, Mountain, Ga.) made the score 81-59 with 1:43 remaining and the Friars cruised to their third-straight victory. Senior Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) posted 12 points and 14 rebounds for his second-consecutive double-double and the 24th of his career. The Friars shot 50.8 percent for the game, marking the second-straight contest in which the team has shot over 50 percent from the field. Mark Socoby and Kaimondre Owes each posted 13 points to pace the Black Bears. The Friars are off until Thursday, November 27 when they face Baylor at 11:30 p.m. ET in Anaheim, Calif. The Thanksgiving night showdown is the first of three games for the Friars in the 76Classic. Providence also plays on Friday, November 28 and Sunday, November 30.
