PC vs. UNC Asheville Box
BAYAMON, Puerto Rico - The Providence College men's basketball team defeated UNC Asheville, 72-67, in the third round of the Puerto Rico Tip Off on Sunday, November 18 in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. With the win, the Friars improved to 3-2 on the season.
Due to injuries, the Friars only had seven players available for the action on Sunday versus the Bulldogs. Junior Bryce Cotton (Tucson, Ariz.) returned from his sprained ankle that sidelined him from the Friars' game on Friday night versus Penn State and led the team with 15 points in the first 20 minutes. Junior Kadeem Batts (Powder Springs, Ga.) added nine points to help pace the offense as the Friars held a 32-25 lead at halftime.
Cotton continued to pace the Friars in the second half as he registered 30 points in the game after hitting 11 of 19 shots from the field.
The Friars started the second half with an 8-2 run and built their largest lead of the game (40-27) just two minutes into the contest. However, the Bulldogs chipped away at the lead and held a 64-63 advantage with just 3:14 remaining in the game. The Friars came out of a media timeout and junior Lee Goldsbrough (Newcastle, England) hit a jump shot from the top of the key with 2:22 remaining to give the Friars a one-point lead (65-64) that they never relinquished. Cotton scored six points in the final 1:36 to help seal the win for the Friars.
In addition to Cotton's strong performance, Batts and sophomore LaDontae Henton (Lansing, Mich.) each registered a double-double for the Friars. Batts recorded 15 points and 11 rebounds while Henton had 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The Friars will return action on Friday, November 23 versus Fairfield at the Dunkin' Donuts Center at 7:00 p.m.
