Erron Maxey And Jamaal Camah Pace Friars To Final Preseason Win
Nov. 14, 1999 PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Juniors Erron Maxey (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) and Jamaal Camah (Salem, Mass.) each turned in double-doubles to lead the Providence College Friars to an 84-72 win over the One World All-Stars in preseason college basketball action Sunday night. Maxey turned in his second impressive performance in a row as he scored 28 points and pulled down 13 rebounds while Camah scored 15 and added 11 boards in the preseason tilt. Junior David Murray (New York, N.Y.) added 12 points in his second game as a Friar and freshman Marcus Jefferson (East Chicago, Ind.) scored ten points on the night. The All-Stars, a collection of former collegiate players, were led offensively by Marshall Grier and P.G. Green who each scored 17 points in the game. The Friars lead by as many as nine points in the first half only to see Grier and Green lead One World on a 7-1 run over the final three minutes to tie the game 41-41 at the end of 20 minutes of play. Both teams came out sluggish in the second half and when Green made a pair of free throws at th 15:42 mark, the All-Stars had their only lead of the night at 47-45. From there, the Friars turned up the defensive pressure holding the All-Stars to two points over the next six-plus minutes while scoring 13 points of their own with Maxey getting five points and Camah four in the run to give PC a 58-49 lead with 9:55 left in the game. Providence would improve its lead to as many as 17-points at 80-63, but a 9-4 final run in the closing minutes for the One World All-Stars cut the final margin to 84-72. The Friars shot 43.8% for the game, but made 26 turnovers on the evening. PC outrebounded One World by a 51-35 margin and the Friars' defense held the All-Stars to 37.1% shooting from the floor. PC's starting five of Maxey, Camah, Murray, Jefferson and Abdul Mills (Fr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) accounted for 67 of the Friars' 84 points in the game. The 1999-2000 season gets underway for keeps on Saturday, November 20th when the Friars host the Holy Cross Crusaders at the Providence Civic Center in a 7:35 tip-off. PC has not faced the Crusaders since December of 1992. The Friars lead the all-time series with a 38-27 margin in 65 games.
