Friars Rally To Defeat Upstate New York All-Stars, 88-66, In Preseason Basketball Action
Nov. 4, 1999 Providence, R.I. - Junior forward Erron Maxey scored on a layup with just three seconds left to give the Providence College Friars an 88-86 preseason win over the Upstate New York All-Stars at the Providence Civic Center Thursday night. Maxey's layup capped a great night as he completed the double-double with a career best 29 points and ten rebounds. The junior was 13-for-20 from the floor and 3-for-3 from the line as he scored 21 points in the second half to lead the PC comeback. The Friars started the game slowly, scoring just two points in the first 7:26 of the game as the All-Stars ran out to a 15-2 lead. The visitors would lead by as many as 16 points in the first half and went into halftime with a 49-40 lead. Without question, the Friars suffered first game jitters in the first half as they made 11 of their 15 turnovers in the game and the All-Stars were able to beat the PC press time and again for easy baskets. Daimon Bethea scored 14 of his 22 points in the first half and Brian Thompson had 12 of his 19 to lead the All-Stars. In the second half, the Friars settled down and started to whitle away at the lead. After Thompson hit a pair of free throws to give the All-Stars a 68-57 lead with 10:58, the Friars went on a 16-5 run over the next 6:23 and tied the game on a Marcus Jefferson layup to tie the game at 73-73. After an Antoni Wyche layup, Maxey converted a three-point play at 4:08 to give the Friars the lead at 76-75. David Murray canned a layup and PC had a three-point lead at 78-75. The All-Stars answered right back as they went on a 9-0 run to make it 84-78 with just 1:35 left. From there, Maxey took over scoring eight of PC's final ten points to give the Friars the win at 88-86. Jefferson and Jamaal Camah added 13 points for the Friars with Abdul Mills and Donta Wade getting nine each. Antoni Wyche and Jamal Marshall also scored in double figures for the All-Stars getting 14 and 10 points respectively.
