WACO, Texas - The Providence College Friars were defeated by the Baylor Bears, 79-68, in the NIT Quarterfinals on Wednesday, March 27 in Waco, Texas. The Friars were paced by their veteran players as junior Bryce Cotton (Tucson, Ariz.), senior Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior Kadeem Batts (Powder Springs, Ga.) all scored 20 or more points in the game.
Baylor built an eight-point lead with 7:14 remaining in the half when the Friars went on an 18-10 run to close the half tied at 38-38. Cotton fueled the run as he scored 14 points over the final six minutes of the half. Batts added 12 points in the half and Council scored 10. Cory Jefferson scored 12 points to pace the Bears. Each team shot 53 percent over the first 20 minutes of play.
In the second half, the Friars trailed by seven points early as the Bears ripped off seven unanswered points in the first 1:30 of the half. However, Providence battled back and led by one point (59-58) with 8:41 remaining in the contest. Unfortunately for the Friars, that was the last time they led in the game as Baylor outscored the Friars, 21-9, over the remainder of the game. Jefferson was dominant for the Bears, scoring 14 points in the second half to finish with a game-high 26 points.
Cotton finished with 23 points, Council scored 21 and Batts had 20.
Providence finished the season with a 19-15 mark overall. The Friars were 9-4 in their final 13 games of the season.
