CHICAGO, ILL. - The Providence College men's basketball team (14-15, 3-13 BIG EAST) defeated the DePaul Blue Demons (11-17, 2-14 BIG EAST) by the score of 73-71, in Chicago, Ill. on Saturday, February 25. The game marks the first BIG EAST road victory for the Friars since the last time they played at DePaul and defeated the Blue Demons, 79-62, on January 14, 2010.
Freshman forward LaDontae Henton (Lansing, Mich.) and junior guard Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each earned their eighth double-double in the game as Henton scored 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and Council added 14 points and dished out 11 assists. Sophomore Bryce Cotton (Tucson, Ariz.) registered 19 points in the victory.
The Friars started the second half with an 11-6 run to take the lead, 46-45. Providence led by as many as 11 points until the Blue Demons went on a 22-11 run to tie the Friars, 71-71, with 35 seconds to play. Henton scored with 1.7 seconds left to put Providence ahead, 73-71 and blocked a three-point attempt by DePaul sophomore forward Cleveland Melvin in the final second of the game to clinch the victory.
Melvin registered a double-double as he scored 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for DePaul. Sophomore Brandon Young and freshman Jamee Crockett each added 11 points.
In the first half, the Friars took a 4-0 lead to with 17:57 on the clock. The two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half with DePaul leading, 37-35 entering the locker room.
The Friars are back in action on Tuesday, February 28, when they host Connecticut in their final home game of the season. The game will air live on Cox and SNY with the opening tip set for 7:00 p.m.
