PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore guard Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) scored a game-high 22 points, including 15 in the first half to lead the Providence College men's basketball team (16-9, 6-6 BIG EAST) to a 71-66 victory over St. John's (15-12, 6-8 BIG EAST) on Saturday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.

The Friars shot a season-high 90.0 percent from the free throw line converting 18-of-20 attempts, all in the second half. The Friars trailed by two at halftime, 30-28, but went on a 12-4 run during the opening minutes of the second frame to open a 10-point lead, 42-32. The PC defense also clamped down during the first 10 minutes of the second half as they allowed just one Red Storm field goal.

St. John's would not go away and stayed with in eight points over the final 10 minutes of the contest. The Red Storm cut it to three points on three occasions during the last minute of the game, but each time the Friars responded at the free throw line.

Senior Herb Hill (Kinston, N.C.) scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season, a figure that ranks third in the BIG EAST. Sophomore Sharaud Curry (Gainsville, Ga.) scored 18 points, while classmate Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) had seven points and 10 rebounds.

St. John's senior Lamont Hamilton led the Red Storm with 20 points and nine rebounds while sophomore Anthony Mason, Jr. added 19, including 14 in the first half. St. John's went 15-of-16 from the free throw line for a season-high 93.8 percent.

PC out rebounded St. John's 39-24, including a 15-8 edge on the offensive glass.

Providence College men's basketball returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. against West Virginia. It will be the first ever Providence College Bobblehead Night.
