PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team upset No. 21/22 Butler University, 71 on Saturday, Feb. 11 in Providence, R.I. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center, 71-65. The Friars improved to 15-11 overall and 5-8 in BIG EAST play. The Bulldogs fell to 19-6 overall and 8-5 in the BIG EAST. The Friars, who posted their second top-25 win of the season, were led by freshman Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) who had 15 points and five rebounds.
Butler maintained the lead for the majority of the first half. Their greatest lead was five points at 11:37. The Friars took the lead with 6:45 remaining in the first after Jalen Lindsey (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) hit a three pointer followed by a layup to give the Friars a 14-13 lead. The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead with 4:22 remaining off a jump shot by Kethan Savage. Isaiah Jackson (Gainesville, Fla.) evened the score, 23-23, with nine seconds remaining in the half from three point territory. However Savage netted a layup in the closing second of the first half to claim the lead heading into the locker room. The Friars entered the locker room trailing 25-23. Neither team was able to get going offensively as the Friars shot, 8-25 (32%) from the field and Butler was 9-29 (31%).
The Friars trailed the Bulldogs for most of the second half. Butler's largest lead of six points came with 9:34 left as they led 47-41. The Friars then went on a 9-2 run and Cartwright lifted the Friars into the lead at 7:25, when the point guard netted a shot from beyond the arc, 50-49.
Diallo netted an impressive dunk with under five minutes in the second, giving the Friars a three point edge, 59-56. The Friars and Bulldogs continued to trade baskets, however Providence held onto the lead from 8:10 on to claim victory over Butler.
Providence was 44.2% from the field, including 47.4% from three-point territory (9-19). Lindsey and Jackson were 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Butler shot 23-56 from the field for a 41.1 shot percentage and 5-18 from three (28%). The Bulldogs were led offensively by Nate Fowler on 19 points.
In addition to Diallo, Cartwright added 14 points and seven assists and Rodney Bullock and Emmitt Holt each had 12 points. Jackson finished with eight points and three assists for the Friars.
The Friars will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 15 when they host No. 24/25 Xavier in Providence, R.I. for a 6:30 p.m. tip-off. The game will be broadcast by Fox Sports 1.
