NEWARK, N.J. - The Providence College men's basketball team (9-7, 1-3) defeated the Seton Hall Pirates (12-5, 1-3), 67-55, on Sunday, January 13 in a BIG EAST matchup in Newark, N.J.
The Friars had one of their strongest first half performances of the season as they raced out to a 38-22 lead after 20 minutes of play. Junior Bryce Cotton (Tucson, Ariz.) led the Friars with 13 points. Sophomore LaDontae Henton (Lansing, Mich.) had a strong half with 11 points and seven rebounds. Fuquan Edwin paced the Pirates in the first half with 10 points.
The key to the Friars' success in the first half was the 14 turnovers that PC's defense helped force. The Friars converted those turnovers into 17 points. In the second half, the Friars increased their lead to 17 points (47-30) with 15:14 remaining in the game when junior Kadeem Batts (Powder Springs, Ga.) made a layup and converted the free throw after he was fouled for a three point play. Seton Hall chipped away at the Friar lead and got within eight points at the 9:24 mark after Haralds Karlis made two free throws. However, the Friars went on a 12-4 run over the next five minutes to take control of the game. The Pirates got within eight points (64-55) with 1:12 remaining. Providence made one of two free throws, then got a defensive stop and Cotton connected on two free throws to seal the 67-55 victory.
Cotton finished with a game-high 23 points and added nine rebounds. Henton scored 12 points and registered a game-high 13 rebounds. Senior Vincent Council (Bronx, N.Y.) chipped in with 11 points and eight assists.
Edwin had 17 points to lead the Pirates.
For the Friars, it marked their first road win of the season.
Providence returns to action on Wednesday at Georgetown at 7:00 p.m.
