    PROVIDENCE, R.I. - - The Providence College men's basketball team lost to DePaul, 83-73, on Saturday, Jan. 5 in its BIG EAST home opener. The game marked the Friars (8-6) first loss at home this season. Junior guard Bryce Cotton led the Friars with 20 points.

    Providence started freshmen Kris Dunn (New London, Conn.) and Josh Fortune (Hampton, Va.), but it was the veteran line-up during the middle of the first half that provided a spark for the Friar defense. Senior Vincent Council's (Brooklyn, N.Y.) steal with nine minutes left in the first half gave PC it's first lead, 18-15.

    DePaul junior Cleveland Melvin led the Demons with 23 points and added nine rebounds. DePaul led by 22 points during the second half before the Friars' full court press brought the team back to within eight points with 1:54 left in the game. Junior Bryce Cotton (Tucson, Ariz.) led the team with 20 points. Council finished with 16 points and junior Kadeem Batts (Powder Springs, Ga.) contributed 17 points. Junior Sidiki Johnson (Harlem, N.Y.) had career highs of nine points and 13 rebounds.
