Team held its annual banquet on Saturday at the Marriott
More than 300 student-athletes reflect on 2013-14 sports campaign.
Friar seniors helped pace the team to a 20-11 mark overall and a 10-8 record in league play.
Ryan Gomes had a remarkable career as a Friar. Gomes graduated from Providence as the Friars' all-time leading scorer with 2,138 points and ranks fifth all-time in rebounding with 1,028 boards. In his senior campaign, Gomes led the BIG EAST in scoring with 21.6 ppg and finished fifth in the conference in rebounding (8.2 rpg). For his efforts he earned his second consecutive All-BIG EAST First Team accolade. He also was named an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American. As a junior in 2004, Gomes led the Friars to a 20-9 record and an NCAA berth. He averaged 18.9 ppg and 9.4 rebounds while shooting over 50 percent from the floor. Along with his selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team, he earned nine All-America honors, including First Team All-America accolades by both the Associated Press and The Sporting News.
As the 50th pick in the 2005 draft, Ryan Gomes didn't see the floor right away in his first season with the Boston Celtics. However, injuries to the team's big men gave Gomes the opportunity he needed and he delivered. Gomes made the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2006 and had a strong sophomore campaign with the Celtics. A key player in the Celtics' deal for Kevin Garnett, Gomes was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the summer of 2007and immediately stepped up as a veteran on a very young team. On January 21, 2008, Gomes scored a career-high 35 points against the Golden State Warriors in a 109-108 win. He averaged 13.3 points per game during the 2008-09 season with the Timberwolves.
