Men's & Women's Swimming Compete at BIG EAST Championships

Full 2010 BIG EAST Championship Results & Times

Pittsburgh, Pa. -

The men’s and women’s swimming teams competed at the BIG EAST Championships in Pittsburgh, Pa. from Wednesday, February 17 to Saturday, February 20. Out of the 11 schools competing on the men's side, the Friars finished 10th (70). The women’s team finished 11th (62) out of 12 teams, just six points behind Seton Hall.

In his final collegiate meet, senior Mike Loftis (Branford, Conn.) did well for the Friars. Loftis set the Providence College record in the 100y butterfly with a time of 51.05 in a time trial on Friday, February 19. Loftis came in 22nd place in 100y butterfly preliminaries. Sophomore Colin Casciano (Hewitt, N.J.) came in 31st in the event with a time of 52.47.

In her first BIG EAST Championship meet, freshman Sam Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) posted a time of 1:59.19 in the 200y freestyle. Junior Alexis Fatigati (New Milford, N.J.) and sophomore Caroline Caliri (Marblehead, Mass.) both came within two seconds of Schlich’s time.

Senior captain Carrie Lamb finished the 100y backstroke with a time of 1:02.40, shaving three-tenths-of-a-second off her original BIG EAST qualifying time.

Senior Mathew Card recorded a time of 21.50 in the men’s 50y freestyle. The time was less than a half-of-a-second off the pace for qualifying for the finals in the event.

In addition to the swimmers mentioned, seniors Owen Hughes (Portland, Maine), Dave Wilson (Chelmsford, Mass.), Tim Reilly (Floral Park, N.Y.), sophomore Matt Green (Westfield, N.J.), freshmen Erin Nanna (Westwood, Mass.), Kelly Lamoreaux (Manahawkin, N.J.), Chris Morales (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Eric Burtchell (Pawtucket, R.I.) all competed in the BIG EAST Championships for the Friars.


 

 

Louisville won the men’s championship with a final score of 808, defeating second place Notre Dame by 50 points. Notre Dame locked up the women’s championship with a final score of 773.5. The win for the Notre Dame is their 14th straight BIG EAST title. Senior freestyle specialist Josh Schneider of Cincinnati took home the award for male BIG EAST Swimmer of the Year, while junior breaststroke specialist Samantha Maxwell of Notre Dame was named women’s BIG EAST Swimmer of the Year.
