The men’s and women’s diving teams are set to compete in the BIG EAST Diving Championships. This year’s conference championships will be held in Louisville, Ky. at the University of Louisville’s Ralph R. Wright Natatorium.
The event will begin with a senior recognition ceremony at 10:50 a.m. on Friday, February 11. The ceremony will be followed by the women’s 3m and men’s 1m diving preliminary rounds. The top-eight scorers in the women’s 3m and men’s 1m qualify for the finals, which will be held on the same night at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
On Saturday, February 12, the men and women swap events. At 12 p.m. The women will attempt to qualify for the finals in the 1m dive, while the men compete in the 3m dive. The 1m women’s finals are set for 7 p.m. and the men’s 3m finals are at 6 p.m.; both on Saturday night.
In order to qualify for the BIG EAST Championships in men’s 1m diving, a diver must score above 240. For the same event, women must best a score of 225.
The Friar men are led by sophomore Ben Kardian (Valhalla, N.Y.). Kardian successfully qualified for the 1m diving event thanks to a first-place score of 272.85 against Lehigh on October 15, 2010. Kardian boasts a top-score of 277.57 (set on January 29, 2011 against Holy Cross). In last season’s championship, Kardian placed 19th out of 22 divers. Kardian will be joined by senior James Cebulski (Trumbull, Conn.). Cebulski punched his ticket to Louisville on November 6, 2010 when he posted a score of 243.90 at Seton Hall.
Two Connecticut natives lead the Friar women’s team. Sophomores Amie Fracker (Trumbull, Conn.) and Allie Black (Mystic, Conn.) return to the 1m diving championship after respectively placing 26th and 28th last year. Fracker qualified for the event by virtue of a 227.40 score against Lehigh on October 15, 2010. Less than two weeks later, Black qualified in the same event after she posted 226.05 points in a first-place finish at Boston College on October 27, 2010.
