CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed at the Northeast Catholic Invitational on Friday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 19 at Boston College's Flynn Complex Aquatics Center. The women's team went 7-1 and the men's team went 3-2.
The women's team collected seven first place finishes. Freshman Helen Smith (Belmont, Mass.) took first place in the 500y freestyle (5:16.40) and in the 200y backstroke (2:10.51). Senior Jill Mullany (Monroe, Conn.) placed first in the 200y freestyle (1:57.33) and in the 100y freestyle (53.08). The 400y medley relay team and the 400y freestyle team both won first. The 400y medley relay team was made up of junior Kelly O'Neill (Rye, N.Y.), junior Leia Federiconi (Williamsville, N.Y.), Helen Smith, and Jill Mullany, while the 400y freestyle relay team consisted of sophomore Reilly O'Connell (West Barnstable, Mass.), Kelly O'Neill, freshman Mary McKenna (Wethersfield, Conn.), and Jill Mullany. Sophomore Lauren Griffen collected first place in the one meter diving event.
Eight women qualified for the BIG EAST Championships. Freshman Colleen Hartigan (Suffern, N.Y.) and freshman Katie Ainley (Rehoboth, Mass.) qualified for the 200y backstroke. Federiconi qualified for the 100y and 200y breaststroke events. McKenna and Mullany qualified for the 50y, 100y, and 200y freestyle races. O'Connell qualified for 50y and 200y freestyle. O'Neill qualified for the 500y freestyle, and 100y and 200y backstroke. Smith qualified for the 500y free, 200y backstroke, and 100y butterfly.
On the men's side, junior John Fatigati (Mahwah, N.J.) finished first in the 200y IM (1:57.35). The 200y freestyle relay team consisting of freshman Cassidy Bastianelli (Newton, Conn.), freshman Michael Martinico (Nesconset, N.Y.), freshman Jonny Mariner (Marion, Mass.), and senior Andrew St. Pierre (Fairhaven, Mass.) took second place (1:29.79).

Senior Connor Lui (Monroe, Conn.) qualified for the 50y free, 100y butterfly, and 100y backstroke. Graduate student Kyle McLaughlin (Warrington, Pa.) qualified for the 50y and 100y free. St. Pierre qualified for the 100y breaststroke. Junior Justin Tse (Framingham, Mass.) qualified for the 100y and 200y freestyle races.
The Friars men's and women's teams will compete again on Oct. 25 at Bryant University at 6:00pm.
