INDIANAPOLIS, IND.–The Providence College men’s and women’s swimming and diving team has begun competing at the BIG EAST Championships, hosted by IUPUI, in Indianapolis, Ind.

Senior Sam Schlich (Massepequa, N.Y.), junior Jillian Mullany (Monroe, Conn.), junior Kimberly Hall (Morristown, N.J.) and sophomore Kelly O’Neill (Rye, N.Y.) completed the 800y freestyle relay in 7:41.23, setting a new school record for the event.  The previous record of 7:42.40, which included Schlich, Mullany and O’Neill was set at last year’s BIG EAST Championship meet.  O’Neill, sophomores Leia Federiconi (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Meredith Pramer (Norwalk, Conn.) and senior Erin Nanna (Westwood, Mass.) would finish the 200y medley relay in 1:49.74.

On the men’s side, sophomores John Fatigati (Mahwah, N.J.), James Butler (Medfield, Mass.) and Justin Tse (Framingham, Mass.) and senior Eric Burtchell (Pawtucket, R.I.) competed in the 800y freestyle relay and finished in 6:55.69.  Fatigati, Butler, and juniors Andrew St. Pierre (Fairhaven, Mass.) and Connor Lui (Monroe, Conn.) would finish eighth in the 200y medley relay.  The foursome finished the meet in the 1:36.79

In the preliminary 1m diving event, senior Ben Kardian (Valhalla, N.Y.) placed 15th overall, earning 213.25 points and a spot in the final round.  Kardian would finish 15th overall with a final round score of 214.75.

The BIG EAST Diving Championships will conclude on Saturday, March 2.  The events for Thursday, Feb. 28 include the women’s 1m dive, the men’s and women’s 500y freestyle, 200y IM, 50y freestyle and 200y freestyle relay.
