Swimming and Diving Sets School Record On Day One Of BIG EAST Championships

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. -

The Providence College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams took part in day one of the 2017 BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships, presented by Jeep. The meet is being hosted at Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y. Both the men and the women currently sit in fifth place with 56 and 54 points, respectively.

The Friars opened up the championships with a record-setting race in the first swimming event of the evening. The women’s 800-meter freestyle relay team of Helen Smith (Belmont, Mass.), Grace Carey (West Chester, Pa.), Maddie Snow (Bethany, Conn.) and Katie Fallon (Warren, N.J.) combined for a time of 7:38.26. The group bested the previous school by nearly three seconds (7:41.23), which was set by Sam Schlich, Jill Mullany, Kim Hall and Kelly O’Neill in 2013.

Providence College will return to the pool tomorrow morning as action continues with Session 2 starting at 10 a.m. and Session 3 at 6 p.m.

All Championship action will air live on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FOX Sports Go, with wall-to-wall coverage that includes all event preliminaries, finals and awards. Jay Alter and John Fanta will be poolside for the finals reporting on the action.
